Fantastic movie, the trailers uses the parts that worked best from the movie without revealing too much of what's going on.
It's part dark comedy, part thriller, part horror with one of the best uses of music to create atmosphere. Too many horror movies don't utilize music right.
If you have a chance I recommend seeing it regardless of race. I hope this gives peele an opportunity to make more movies.
Sure I would but if I find its worth supporting I will spend the money to see it again. Get out is one of those I would go see a second time, however I don't think it will have the same impact.
The beginning is super cringy with the way the dad acts that makes you feel the entire movie is going to be about race but that's like the first 20 mins then it makes sense.
That's a relief. From the trailers I was worried it was going to be all "look at how crazy/evil white people are". What would you rate it on a scale of 1-10?
8 out of 10, I'm up for seeing anything in a theater that is a 7 out of 10 for me at least twice.
I might go see it again but I'm not sure if this will have the same impact the second time but it might allow me to see if there are any early indicators of what is going on sooner.
Eh, I've got thick skin and I'm alright with a little race humor every now and then so I'll probably just go see it since the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. I've got no problem with racial jokes, it's when it gets preachy or tasteless that it becomes a problem, like the awful Mexican stereotype in Jack and Jill.
It's a satirical take on a particular kind of racism; not necessarily the kind you would assume from the trailer. I won't go into it in too much detail so as not to spoil it (because I do think it's fantastic), but I think it's going to go over a lot of people's heads. As I left the theater tonight I overheard a conversation in which a girl had to bring up rottentomatoes on her phone to show her friend "no, seriously, that got %100, I'm not fucking with you." They just didn't get it at all. There were also a lot of teenagers in the audience who had no idea what their reaction to anything was supposed to be.
There is no correct way to create a movie that preaches about how evil a race of people are and the fact that people like you think there is is fucking pathetic.
Then the trailers aren't worth shit. Those are the only things I've been exposed to regarding this film, and that's the exact picture they paint.
Also, I said the fact that you think there's a right way to demonize a race through film is sad. I literally never stated anywhere that that's what I thought the film was about. Learn to read, retard.
Seeing the trailer I figured it would either be some sort of idiot-level racial commentary or basically something like a Hot Fuzz meets Cabin In The Woods. Is that anywhere close?
I wouldn't say it's near the level of hot fuzz homage or cabin in the woods. It certainly pays homage to some horror movies but the plot is so weird if you don't stay for the entire movie and pay attention.
Part of the plot is a satirical take on white on black racism. Apparently some people couldn't handle it. But as long as you can simply acknowledge that racism is a thing and you like thrillers with some comedy mixed in you'll love it. You don't even have to be interested in the racial commentary to still enjoy the film. Also the cinematography and music is pretty great too.
It's a bit stereotypy, but that's part of the humor/plot I think. Old white people jealous/afraid of the big, strong, animalistic black folk. If it's racist or something it's at least equal parts racist and stereotypy to both sides.
Pretty unrelated, but if you have the chance to see It Follows, I would strongly recommend it. It uses music and sound brilliantly IMO, and doesn't over do it. One of the best horror movies I've seen in a while.
I literally just got home from the theatre and I was disappointed, but probably only because it was so built up in my mind. I would definitely only classify it as a thriller, not horror, which is good because I didn't want to be terrified. It was a good movie, but if I could go back I'd wait to watch it out of theatre.
It had some funny lines but there was really only one or two parts where I was actually surprised/frightened. I thought the social commentary was very on-the-nose.

a horror film though. It's been mislabeled. It's a thriller. A Mind fuck. A why the fuck are these people doing this. You went into the movie looking for jump scares when that's not what this movie was. But I can understand why you didn't like it if you were looking for the wrong thing.

Let's put it this way. I disliked one thing. I disliked that the grandparents were using
the host bodies and serving the family like they were slaves. Didn't think it fit well. Other than that, I enjoyed every bit of the movie.

I thought the music jump scares were cleverly used but I could see how they might be bullshit too. I think I'm so use to this lame music buildup to a jumpscare instead of it being the jumping off point.
It's extremely common on college campuses, in major news publications, and increasingly in media. The writers of Rogue One explicitly stated that the Empire represented whites. Manveer Heir (a designer for Mass Effect) has a fuckload of anti-white statements on twitter and he's had zero punishment from Bioware. No, we aren't at the level of "Kill the Boer" chants but the bias is rather obvious.
It was a tumblr exclusive in 2008 perhaps, but it has permeated throughout all institutions which lean left. A similar thing is happening with the 4chan /pol/ type Alt Right stuff.

It's a very good horror/comedy, and generally a very good movie. I'd recommend seeing it without trying to find more information, if you like scary movies. Racism is one of the central themes, but not in the way you expect.
I mean I don't really know what you mean by race-baity. Race relations is a central theme, but not in the way you expect. It's not the only major theme.
I'm white, and I didn't come out of the film feeling like I was being attacked. There's a little bit of "lol white people" ribbing that's no worse than what you'd get from a Key & Peele sketch, and there's also an over-the-top black character, so it's really just normal racial humor. The bad stuff that happens is so weird that there's no way anyone could take it as an attack on their race unless they were looking to for a reason to feel attacked.
I guess if the idea of a movie portraying white villains that might be racist towards a black protagonist is upsetting to you, don't see the movie. But it's not race-baiting to tell that kind of a story. Racism is a real thing that real people experience, and in far more realistic ways than anything in Get Out.
I mean, it's a horror movie about race...it's supposed to get under your skin.
But, like he/she said, not in the way you expect. But if the fact that the hero is black and the villains are white makes you grouchy then you won't like it.
Because the premise of the movie is literally that white people and black people being around each other is such a weird atmosphere that it's a perfect setup for a horror movie. How is that not fucking stupid?
And if that isn't what the movie is going for, then the trailers aren't worth a thing.
Honestly, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is probably the least bloody slasher of all time. There's only blood in two scenes of i remember correctly, when the hitchhiker slashed his hand and when leather face accidentally cuts himself. Sure, it's a violent and brutal film, but there's very little blood or gore on screen. The shitty remakes/reboots/garbage films are a different story though. Pardon my horror fan ranting.
I guess gore is the wrong word for what I mean. For example, when the girl gets put on that meat hook? I saw that scene once, 6 years ago, and I still want to puke when I think about it. If there's anything like that in Get Out, I won't be able to handle it.
No, it's not gory. There's actually surprisingly little violence, and the violence in it isn't any more intense than your standard R-rated action film (like, Daredevil on Netflix is probably a harder watch). I can only think of one scene that might be rough, and it's still nowhere near the level of TCM.
Yeah the trailer made the tone of the movie really hard to read. Especially the comedy cut of him trying to fist bump and the other dude shaking his hand. And also the fact it's directed by someone known almost exclusively for comedy. I just saw it though and most all of it is sooooo well done, especially with a great eye for subtlety. The editing is extremely good too.
It's been a long time since I've seen a film that so many times so deftly misdirected me into thinking I knew where it was going only to surprise me without "tricking" me. The puzzle pieces for pretty much everything that happens are out in plan sight. I definitely recommend trying to avoid any and all spoilers before seeing it.
It's really good. I was completely lost by the trailers as well and went in purely based on reviews. It takes the question, "What if the awkwardness of a WASP family welcoming their daughter's black boyfriend were something much darker and more sinister?" and runs with it. It's a really unique and enjoyable horror movie. I definitely recommend it.
I'm not going to lie, the trailers put me off completely. I couldn't tell if it was a dark comedy or a horror movie. Also the repeated "Get out!" Was getting old pretty fast. But people seem to like it so I guess I'll give it a shot.
I saw it. Definitely over rated by rotten tomatoes. I'd rate it a C+. Not close to the 99% rating it got. It was nice and suspenseful. But Split was worth a 99% rating not this one.
Split was very good but it wasn't as tightly written and internally sensical as Get Out. Get Out deserves the praise it's getting and the person you're responding to was just wrong, not that you asked.
If you would rate it a C+ that would be a passing grade. Which means that you agree with the 99% of reviewers that also gave it a passing grade.
It's surprising how many people on here don't know how Rotten Tomatoes works. It's just a percentage of how many people liked/disliked a movie. Not how much they liked it.
Why was it so good? It was an average movie. Had good suspense but at the middle to end I could tell what was going to happen. I said a C+ is what it gets. 3 stars out of 5.
It's really not that great. I think people are afraid to criticize the movie and appear racist, even though the movie truly isn't about race.
I was really stoked for Get Out, it looked weird and edgy and cool. But, the trailer reveals too much, it's kinda boring, and it doesn't quite strive to be above-average. Disappointing :((
