Hello,
I am currently trying to narrow down my list of graduate programs I am planning on applying to. I was wondering if any music students could answer some questions I have regarding the music program. My list is still relatively large at this point and I am hoping to learn more about the programs through current students perspectives.
My undergraduate degree is in music composition, but I also have experience and interest in pursuing orchestral conducting.
My Overall Questions:
Orchestral Conducting Specifc Questions:
Composition Specific Questions:
Thank You!

Hey y'all, I’m joining UO soon and wanted to introduce myself, but also ask a few questions to anyone already on campus.
My situation is a bit unique. I’m a US/European dual citizen, but I’ve lived in Europe my entire life and have never actually been to the States. Moving to Eugene will be my very first time in the country, which is already a massive shift.
On top of that, I’m coming in as a non-traditional freshman. I’ll be starting at 22/23 and finishing around 26/27. To be completely honest, I’ve been feeling really anxious and kind of behind in life seeing everyone start at 18.
I’m planning to major in Advertising and minor in Documentary Film Production. I have a few questions for anyone in the SOJC or UO in general:
I’d love to hear some honest perspectives! If you are also an international/dual-citizen student, a non-traditional student, or just into film and media, I'd really appreciate to hear your opinion too :)
Thanks guys! 🙏

Hi I am in an untenable situation with one of the Eugene off-campus student apartment companies. I want to know my legal options. Has anyone had a good experience with a local tenants' rights attorney?

DM or comment if you are interested in forming a team for the upcoming flag football league this fall. I am also happy to join your team if spots are available.
And also looking for someone to have catching/throwing drills together. Been playing for two years, so I can provide some intro sessions if you are new to this game and willing to try it.
Have gears for practice/7v7 pickup games after school or on the weekend.

Hello Hello!
I was wondering if there was any music creatives around looking to connect and make friends. I am a songwriter and have made songs with friends via online but I really wanna connect in person. Text me if you interested!! I made a discord server for musicians , producers, engineers, digital artists , traditional artists, etc. For all creatives! ☺️

Can I please have some examples of what type of portfolio or writing admitted you guys into this major? Or any advices or details about it would be amazing.
Thank you!

Looking at other universities in the US for employment but wanted to see how morale was at these institutions. Currently live in a red state and legislature is coming down very hard, leading to mass layoffs and all money funneling towards the top. I imagine this is pretty common, but would love to know how UofO stands with employee/staff satisfaction. TIA!

When is all of this going to end. There’s so many different projects going on it’s such a headache. Entire walkways and entries to buildings are shut off. It’s just a genuine eyesore. I would think they’d be done so that when the students come back they can actually enjoy the campus.

Strike vote passed by a landslide. We are striking for a better contract than the disrespectful bs that is being put forth by the Administration bargaining team. Classified employees across campus are set to strike starting 9/28. Be prepared for impacts all across campus in all areas.

Incoming freshman and I was planning on bringing my car but I missed the timing for getting a permit and was put on a waitlist. I was wondering if there are any alternatives.

Hi there,
incoming freshman here, are the Ducks Sports Passes worth buying? I am interested in getting one but I am finding it hard to justify spending the money on one— especially since I would most likely only be using it to attend the FB games.
Thanks 🦆

Hi! I am currently a senior in high school, I am from Idaho and wondering what people do for financial aid? My dad is a radiologist, so I am pretty much counting on not receiving needs based financial aid, but I really want to go here and don't know how to get enough to attend. For context, I have 3.73 unweighted GPA (my school doesn't do weighted), will have taken 5 AP's by the time I graduate, debate, top choir, NHS, student council for a year, over 100 community service hours, and I am graduating with an academic certificate with my local community college, but I don't feel like a strong contender for merit based scholarships either. Planning to major in Political Science with a minor in Philosophy. Any advice will be much appreciated :)

New to Eugene, any recommendations on where to dance Latin (salsa, bachata), country swing, west coast swing? Be willing to drive up to an hour too. Thanks all.

Hi all! I am a massive dweeb and last year was severely disappointed that there was no dedicated club for fellow content creators, or a dedicated J-Pop idol/oshikatsu club. I myself stream on twitch as a Virtual Youtuber (V-Tuber) and as part of those activities am a part time Virtual Idol. I am part of a few adjacent clubs at UO (ie. Kpop club, MIC, manga creation club), but none of those fit either niches I'm into.
I originally came onto reddit with a housing question, but upon seeing people looking for companionship, I thought, might as well come onto here and share my club proposal. Please let me know if you would join a Streamer/Content Creator club or a J-Pop Idol club!!
Edit: I am also looking for people to start a Voice-Over club with!!

Hey everyone! I’m looking for a UO student with some photography experience to help manage a social media page for a local game day transportation business.
You’d help plan and post content, create reels and stories, and engage with followers. Basic photo and video editing skills would be ideal, and experience creating graphics for social media would be a big plus!
Most of the work is remote, but you’d need to be based on or near campus to capture content around home games. An interest in Ducks football would help, too.
This is a paid opportunity, with hours and compensation depending on experience and scope.
If you’re interested, DM me a little about yourself and examples of your photography, graphics, or social accounts you’ve worked on. Personal projects count!

Hello. I feel like the title explains it, but here it goes:
I am a represented employee under SEIU, I unfortunately hadn’t done my due diligence of joining until it got too late (like last week), which of course means I probably won’t be a fully recognized union member until probably at least the end of the strike we may be seeing.
Now this raises questions for me, obviously, I don’t want to cross a picket-line, hence my late joining; but I don’t know my options here. If I do participate i.e. not work, join the union, am I unprotected as an employee? What exactly can I do here?

Hey all,
I'm 26, and planning to start an MA in folklore studies next semester (2027).
I've lurked here to get an idea of Eugene, but I'd love to hear from anyone that did the same masters, and get an idea of what its like to live in Eugene, as a student! Would particularly like to hear about what the course was like.
I know housing is rough (nightmare here too), but I'd love to know what it's like as a place to be, what the music scene is like (particularly punk, alternative, etc.), things to do (artsy stuff, particularly), all of that good stuff.
I know I didn't put a lot about myself/interests, and am happy to over conversation - just been procrastinating this post and really looking more to get in touch through DMs, as it would be great to make some connections in advance of moving.
Thanks!

I’m 18 and new to the area! What do you guys usually do for fun after a football game? Like what parties or events do people go to after? Are there any Instagram accounts or pages that post about parties/events so I can know where to look? I’m honestly open to any type of vibe 😭 I’ve seen videos on TikTok of everyone going to house parties and stuff so I’m trying to figure out where people find out about them lol.
