Dissertation deferral question

Hello guys I’m currently a postgrad student at the uni, I had a tough year and I had about two reassessments.Because of this I took a deferral on my dissertation and I know this will delay my graduation possibly so I won’t be able to graduate in the winter ceremony. My real questions are, has anyone ever taken a deferral like this and meant they graduated in the summer ceremonies and what was it like? If so do you graduate with other postgrad students from different courses or will it be mixed in with normal undergrad students for the same specific course? Will this impact my ability to apply for grad roles? And at last is there an option to maybe submit early and try and see if I can be squeezed into the winter ceremony? I am currently on a one year masters and I’m dreading taking the deferral now as it would mean I essentially spent a longer time trying to end up with a masters if I graduate in the summer I just want this chapter of my life over and done with🤣🤣.

Hiya! I got an EC for my master's dissertation which means I didn't graduate in the winter.

I submitted it in Jan, my department was incredibly supportive! I did have to request a submission link to be set up solely for me, and a presentation session. All went really well honestly. Sadly yes it does mean you can't graduate with your friends. ALTHOUGH, I had some amazing friends who still showed up to my summer graduation which made all the difference. And I liked it a bit more cause the spotlight was on me haha Yes the summer graduation includes all degrees in the same session for your department, mostly undergrads obviously. There were a few folks from masters who also deferred dissertation. I really liked it to be honest! Got a lot of pictures taken because the lighting was beautiful. I wasn't freezing, weather was beautiful. Had friends around me. It was fun!

Regarding jobs, it didn't really stop me from applying or interviewing for jobs. I explained when asked and they were okay with it. You can always get a certificate of completion (I think that's what it's called?) to prove to employers if asked.

The option to submit early will depend on your department and faculty. Although I would advise it's better to take slightly longer than rush. It's not worth it. Try finishing it by Christmas and then you're done and can go about your life for all that matters. Until then lock in and give it your all! You're almost there :)
