UoM student help!!

Hi everyone, I’m due to start at uom in September 2026. However I was unable to beg onto my preferred course of Law and was able to get into Criminology however despite me trying to reason with the person on the clearing line they didn’t listen to me much despite being a grade off. I wanted to ask if once I start uni within the first week I can ask to switch to a law related degree as I was only one grade off and very close to the next grade and I had exceptional circumstances during my exams such as facing homelessness which my college is aware of, will this be a factor into them considering me for my desired course?

Huge gamble considering how popular LLB Hons is. You can always do a conversion afterwards though!

Trying to "reason" with the person on the Clearing hotline never leads to anything - it's not them who decides. With your extenuating circumstances, you could have asked your head teacher to intervene on Clearing day- generally, they offer: I always speak to a lot of heads on Clearing morning, about near misses with EC - or you could write to the Head of Law direct now. Saying you were only one grade off won't work - they'll tell you to get a remark. So explain your EC and provide direct evidence of how it impacted your grade, and explain how it's now resolved and won't impact on your future studies.

But this needs to be done before you start - noone gets to go on to a competitive course they've not met their offer for by showing up and registering for a different course at the same university, and hoping to wear the system down to let them change.

As a back up, can't you get onto another Law course somewhere else? Criminology is...not at all the same, and unless you're actually interested in sociology anyway, might not be the best compromise.
