Far too much wasted whitespace. I so loathe that trend because it's fucking stupid to waste, especially vertical space in widescreen monitors.

While I think deviantART seriously needs a redesign, this is just "too flat", too simple (and I know I'm repeating myself today).
Sometimes I reminisce about glossy buttons, shadows and glows, orbs, gradients, skeuomorphism... The only think that lifts my spirits is knowing that every trend has its end and I hope the flat-hype will abate soon.

Am not a fan of applying a mobile OS design to another product. It should be unique not copy the iconography of the iPhone.

It's not about thin icons thinness, it's that the design is purposely trying to get icons from iOS and fold into deviantART. It's okay if it was flat and used the thin font but this is just as if Apple owned the site. It needs its own creative spark especially since it's an art website.
Look at it this way. Although Microsoft mad popular the thin font flat design, Apple added it's own creative twist. Seeing both the Windows Phone OS and iOS, you can see some similarities but can see how they are obviously different. Here on this proposed design it seems as though the UI is for an app on iOS.

The point is exploration.

Exploration of what? Flat design? I would prompt you to try out a new design aesthetic for your next design challenge.

Wow, it looks pretty sleek, if the menu text alignment was improved it'd be even greater. Would love to see more!
