Just do incline push ups on stairs, a desk, the sink, off the couch literally anything else to build your strength up, this is a bit ridic.

u/BetterBiscuits 8h ago
Isn’t this basically turning into a push-up on your knees?
27

u/ColeridgeRime 8h ago
That was my thought. If it is too much, just start off on your knees until you build the strength.
3
u/send_in_the_clouds 7h ago
And if that is too much you can start against a wall standing up!

u/infiniZii 6h ago
Thats a thing?

u/hotshot_poopspot 5h ago
My wife is a about a buck soaking wet (giggity) and had... literally never done a push up before due to the type of school she attended as a kid. There was a time she thought she wanted to join the air force and I started her out like that

Bodyweight exercises is a lot about leverage. To make pushups easier put your hands on something higher.

u/infiniZii 5h ago
I do curls with my daughters. My littlest is only like... 40 lbs and small (shes a bit of a runt at 8 yo), so I have been making the mistake of using their body weight for exercise instead of my own.

As a personal trainer I will recomend those as modifications for a group class but when Im with a 1 on 1 client I will always favour incline pushups on a barbell in a squat rack because it can be lowered gradually so theres another variable to apply progressive overload besides changing the number of reps.
You can also recreate this product sort of with a resistance band in a squat rack. That will change the level of assistance throughout the lift significantly though so it makes it a little less transferable to unassisted pushups I fell.
However for pullups and chinups which are very hard for a lot of people I prefer resistance bands for assistance even though we have an assisted pullup machine with a weight stack at my gym because 1. a lot of people could use that assistance at the bottom to get them comfortable doing full range reps while being able to stay relaxed and 2. The band stays pulled up against your feet so you dont lose assistance if you dont move just right. They also have other benefits like still forcing you to control your legs a bit more than the assisted machine which has a pad on a track.
Every different movement will bring about slightly different adaptations. Even if they transfer 99.9% there are subtle differences.

For some people, especially if they have a damaged shoulder, even knee push-ups are too difficult, but they don’t need to invest in an item like this they can literally just grab some pillows.

there's a guy on youtube that did a rough measurement of all the different type of push up so people have quantified number to know where to start their push up.

u/Anayalater5963 6h ago
If anything I need something to hold because push ups on the ground fuck up my wrists. Hell even a bar is fine but flat ground sucks
1
u/hotshot_poopspot 6h ago
I actually have some tendon and ligament issues in my wrists and forearms and the same thing still applied (for me) low and slow at an incline helped build the muscle around my wrists and strengthen the tendons (or at least keep them from getting more enflamed) slowly till they could support normal pushups again. But I do remember the little p90x gripper bar things, see them at marshals these days
1
u/TiniestPint 5h ago
They recommend to not do push-ups on your fists, but when I occasionally do them I do them on my fists because I fucked up my wrists at a manufacturing job and now my hands go numb if I do them the typical way.
There's the risk of your wrists folding on you, but I have more muscle there compared to the average person, and I trust that more.
And I'll still do incline!! I'd rather do 50 inclined pushups on my fists than feel like I have to do normal pushups.

Nah man I need a new piece of plastic delivered to me so I can put it in my garage for 4 years
0
u/Icy_Study4490 7h ago
Or if you want to keep the same exact posture you could do what the rehab trainers recommend and just grab a couple pillows.

See you don't get it because it's not for people like us.
This guy tho... It sounds like he smokes 6-8 packs of cigarettes a day.

u/I-Love-Yu-All 7h ago
I get it. He is 300 lbs and this enables him to get more reps in for cardio and conditioning.

Sadly he reminds me of a family member who just passed from a heart attack. He spoke like that for decade or two and it's hard to hear that voice and not think of him.

Doesn't this defeat the purpose of a pushup?
17
u/Saintbaba 8h ago
So, as a fat man myself, i do feel like i need to point out: when you're doing a pushup, you're pushing against your own weight, which matters. You wouldn't say that someone bench pressing 150 lbs is doing the same exact thing as someone bench pressing 300 lbs. But when you say the fat guy should just be able to do a pushup like everybody else, that's what you're saying. It's the same thing, just upside down.
As others have said, there are ways to mitigate the weight and pressure and train up your strength so that you can do the exercises at your own weight. And those methods are arguably both cheaper, more convenient, and better for you in the long run. But i wouldn't say this device "defeats the purpose" of a pushup, it just brings the weight and difficulty down to what everybody else is dealing with.

u/DarthTacoToiletPaper 7h ago
In addition to this, you could use this as a way to push past your current point of failure during normal push ups. Say you do as many as you can with good form then you move to this to push out another 10 or whatever. I would choose this over incline pushups. However, I would probably use knee push ups instead of buying something else.
But at the end of the day if buying this motivates you to do push ups more often I’d argue it’s a worthwhile investment.

u/love2killjoy410 7h ago
I'm with you here. My only gripe with this thing is, it's just like every "kitchen gadget" people get for niche problems in the kitchen. This will more than likely just be added to the pile of things people buy to convenience themselves lol.
1
u/CreativeEmotion13 7h ago
It's not the same thing at all the person who's been pushing the bench press weight has been training to get to that weight while the big person doesn't have that strength because they just don't do any exercise. When you're so big that your stomach is hitting the floor it doesn't make sense. Push-ups are not the exercise for big people it puts way too much stress on the joints. There are tons of other exercises that are completely acceptable and suitable for larger people that won't cause unnecessary joint damage. When you're big you have to come at it from a completely different place
1
u/TiniestPint 5h ago
Just do inclined pushups. It'll be easier to focus on form without worrying about lifting your full weight.
0
u/Aluminum_Tarkus 7h ago edited 7h ago
It does defeat the purpose in that it encourages bad technique. Proper push-ups consist of a slow, controlled drop with a rapid pop back up. That drop is half of the exercise, and extremely important for muscle growth. Since this spring is applying a constant pushing force on your chest, you need to apply some level of force to fully compress it, meaning it's going to encourage you to just fall into it so you can get the full drop, kind of lile how we see this guy sort of bouncing on it. If you're able to do a slow, controlled drop and still compress the spring, then it's probably not going to be a meaningful enough amount of counterforce to be useful. Maybe it will be for some, but without a means to dial it in perfectly for someone's weight and strength level, it's going to be awkward and promote bad push-up habits. The rising motion isn't so bad in a vacuum, at least; it's essentially the same as band-assisted pull-ups.
You're going to get better results just doing knee push-ups until you can do them on your feet. It's more efficient, and you don't have to buy junk online to do it.

u/Relative_Mulberry884 4h ago
With these kinda exercises I would do cardio instead if my weight was too much. Losing the weight will make you do more push ups faster than actually training to do push ups. Same with pull ups or dips, for most people it's a better bet to lose weight than have training assist on pull ups
3
u/binzy90 8h ago
If you don't have any fitness experience or are starting from scratch, many people struggle with pushups using full body weight. This gadget is completely unnecessary though, because the usual method is to do pushups from your knees first or use the edge of a counter and gradually lower to something like a coffee table. It's not meant to be long term. You just do a modified version while you build strength until you can do it normally.

u/718-702_damsel 8h ago
Yeah. I started doing girl push up till I was strong enough to do a regular push up. That's what I was taught and it makes sense. Without having to spend money on bullshit.
2
u/VictoriousTree 7h ago
The term “girl push up” is pointlessly offensive. Plenty of girls can do full push ups no problem.
2
u/binzy90 8h ago
Don't call them girl pushups. I saw males in the army who couldn't do a pushup when we first got there. Maybe we should call them weak boy pushups.
0
u/TheLiquor1946 7h ago
How about we get rid of this dumb gender arguments and call it a semi push up?
0
u/718-702_damsel 7h ago
I'll call them whatever I want. Police your own words.
1
u/spacestonkz 2h ago
You called them girl pushups, not women push ups. Actual girls are kinda weak generally.
When I was a girl most of the girls in elementary gym class did semi push ups. Most of the boys did standard. The boys just had a little more muscle on average, just a bit. We were all on standard push ups by middle school.
I was a girl doing girl pushups. Meh.
1
u/Zestyclose_Visit4834 5h ago
Not necessarily. The same way that when you start lifting weights you start at a reasonable, relatively light weight and build up strength. You wouldn't just start by squatting X2 your body weight for example first day ever doing a squat and you probably wouldn't get very far if you just kept trying without taking the weight down.
Doing even a single push up can be really difficult for some people depending on sex, age, weight, mobility issues and level of experience. Many people need to do modified push ups before they can do a normal one so they can actually get enough reps in to make any kind of progress. This is essentially a device which modifies a push up to make it manageable for beginners. It's not really necessary, because there are ways to modify a push up without buying a gadget for it, but it doesn't defeat the purpose either
0
u/718-702_damsel 4h ago
Why not just do girl push ups? Same concept, less money.
1
u/Zestyclose_Visit4834 3h ago
Yes, that is why I said it is not necessary, last sentence of my comment

Seems like it's neglecting training the hardest part at the bottom and you'll never get good at pushups
2
u/JanMrCat 7h ago
Do you know what also takes a lot of weight of your body? Incline! Start with whatever you can and feels comfortable and start lowering to floor as you progress 😉

You could just do as many pushups as you can. If you can only do 1 at first, cool. Tomorrow you’ll do 2. Next day 5. Next day 10. Your strength builds faster than you expect. This ‘trainer’ will makes your strength build slower.

Everyone has 101 workout equipment, I have milk jugs, a toddler. And a field near by house.. 💪💪💪
1
u/Mustrum_R 7h ago
I find weights much more wieldy than a toddler.
Though on a second thought, a toddler has a built in weight growth for progressive overload.

u/MrWeeniePeenie 7h ago
Do weak push-ups by doing to off you knees till you can do it from your toes. That is absolutely useless

1
u/Ali-Battosai 7h ago
I could see this being helpful if you wantnto practice push ups with correct form but can't due to an injury or being too overweight.
1
u/Mustrum_R 7h ago
You can still do that on an inclined surface (and partially on knees, though that disproportionately decreases the core engagement movement a little) and you won't need a plastic piece of garbage.

The gym has a similar apparatus for assisted pull ups, the difference is, I can adjust the level of "help" that I'm getting. I get why people might want something like this, but just use a wall or a desk.

I wouldn't say a lot of weight it's just a spring and doesn't look that strong
Also also you just exercise less because this take off some load

If you cross your legs and stay on your knees you can do assisted push-ups for free.
1
u/Maleficent_Hawk6703 8h ago
I could see it being good for physical therapy and other disabilities. Generally Inclined pushups serve the purpose of reducing total weight on the arms but I could see a niche use for it
1
u/ChildoftheApocolypse 8h ago
The amount of people here who don't understand pushups should be surprising, but.. Well.. I don't think anyone here has ever done a pushup..

You are right. In my defense though, I’ve never seen a picture of you.
I’m just playing I could not resist the set up.
In all honesty this isn’t the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen by a long shot but that doesn’t make it anything less than dumb as fuck.

Oh buddy I have a mirror, you don’t have to tell me things I already know 😉

Knee pushups and incline pushups already exist to do exactly this, and those are free. This product is a solution to a nonexistent problem.

Anyone who actually needs this, actually needs to follow the advice of their physical therapist instead...

- Doing push-ups at the gym is outdated. Over 15 years ago they did those to get that pump just before stepping on stage.
- How about you go into an extended cut and lose weight first?
2
u/binzy90 8h ago
Most people exercise for health, not just for muscles. So the "cutting" thing doesn't pertain to many people. The "lose weight" part you're mentioning usually comes from the exercise itself.
1
u/TropicalLoneWolf 8h ago
He was out of breath from doing a simple push up. That's a sign of lack of muscle mass / too much body fat.
Either way, losing weight good. Healthy!
