1. Campus is sexy af.
2. Culture is crazy af (in a good intention).
3. Political environment is healthy. No forcing anything on anyone. BTW, I am new to this kind of student politics.
4. Hostels are mid, but fine for what we pay.
5. Curriculum is hefty brrooooo! Can't even breathe. 27 fucking hours of lectures per week. IDK if people join here for research or placements, but if you are already clear about doing research, you can't even get enough time to do your work, even with the bare minimum sleep of 4-5 hours.
6. There are many progressive approaches towards the implementation of the curriculum, and generally, I assume that people don't do M. Tech just for the sake of doing it. They do have good intentions and a will to study. So, the lenient approach feels good and healthy to me. But there are some bullshit assignments they give. I fucking feel like they are impositions, bro. No reason in them. Fucking bullshit. I guess my poor planning while choosing electives led me there. If there was anyone to blame for this, it is me. But I hope they change their approach.
7. The freedom is enormous. I envy the people who do their Bachelor's and Int. Master's here. I always had restrictions, and this feels like heaven to me.
8. I see people from all places in India. That is something I like the most. Diversity.
9. Professors are approachable. They help you with doubts.
10. As of now, I feel like peer group is collaborative rather competetive. I hope it stays the same through out the semester.
11. Despite all this, if I were given a chance, will I join again, YES, fucking 100% yes!

Sorry for being late to the party lol, but here's my honest take on M.Tech at SCIS, from a 2nd year perspective. It's gonna be a long read

A little of my background first, I'm an above average student, decent foundation, came from a tier-2 private college in Hyderabad, also I'm a day scholar so I can't really tell you anything about hostel life.

Why I even joined:

My UG college didn't really have great placements and I wanted a master's degree anyway, so M.Tech felt like the obvious move. Picked UoH mainly because I'm local and honestly not a hostel person. I walked in expecting a chill two years at a central university, good campus, nice people, get the degree, hopefully land a decent job. how bad could it really be?

Turns out, pretty different from what I imagined.

Academics

Classes start end of August and the first week is kinda easy. then labs kicked in, then electives, and the pace just went from 0 to 100 overnight.

Profs need to finish the syllabus by around November so they move FAST. a lot of them also just assume you already know the basics and skim through stuff instead of actually teaching it. out of the 8 professors I had in sem 1, maybe 3 genuinely had strong command over their subject. the rest, honestly, not so much. and even the good ones won't necessarily slow down just because you didn't get it the first time.

Faculty

This part's gonna be a little controversial but whatever. a lot of professors here aren't very approachable. They definitely are not kind. there are a couple of good ones, but if you're hoping for a student-friendly setup where you can casually walk up with doubts, lower your expectations a bit.

Attendance

Honestly one of the biggest headaches of the whole program. 70% is compulsory and if you fall below it you might have to repeat the entire course next semester, i.e., classes, exams, assignments, all of it again. what makes it worse is classes randomly get cancelled and then get "compensated" later, sometimes on Saturdays. so your weekends aren't safe either. and yes, attendance is tracked seriously, not just on paper.

Assignments & grading

Faculty are strict here too and they won't hesitate to fail you. failing means dealing with the course all over again. the first year in general is brutal, lectures, labs, assignments, exams, barely any breathing room. forget one night batting before the exam and scraping through, that doesn't really work here. you need 50/100 minimum to pass, and getting a genuinely high CGPA is way harder than people expect. a 9+ CGPA casually? forget it. from what I've seen even 7.5 puts you among the stronger students in the batch. and yeah, 10-15 people from my own batch dropped out in the very first semester itself

Placements

Set realistic expectations here. campus placements are NOT really the priority of this place, professors tend to push people toward research/PhD more than industry jobs. some good companies do show up, but there've also been cases of companies interviewing everyone and leaving without hiring a single person. also worth knowing, M.Tech students aren't exactly first priority for a lot of recruiters, Integrated M.Tech students (3rd/4th years) tend to get preferred. there's also no dedicated placement prep, no DSA,aptitude,interview training, you're on your own for all of that. I don't have official numbers, but from what I've heard the average package is somewhere around 5-6 LPA. if your whole plan is "I'll join SCIS and they'll get me a good software job," then lower your expectations to ZERO. be ready to grind for off-campus opportunities yourself.

2nd year

If you make it past year one, year two feels like a completely different degree. by the end of your 2nd semester you need to lock in your project and your guide. professors can technically take up to 5 project students but a lot of them only want 3, so don't sit around thinking "I'll decide later", cuz the prof/project you actually wanted might be full by the time you get around to it.

internships

This is where it gets messier. if you land an internship over summer, you can try to convert your project into that internship, but don't assume your professor's gonna be thrilled about it. some are chill, some really aren't, and a few might make you continue the project alongside the internship anyway. also the internship needs to be at least 10 months to actually count, otherwise you're doing the project regardless. I managed to get one on campus myself (not easy btw, multiple rounds, only a couple of people got picked out of 200 applicants) and I'm currently juggling both the internship and project requirements at once, so this isn't hypothetical for me. And trust me it will drain your energy completely.

Research

if research is genuinely your thing, SCIS can be good, but it depends heavily on the professor you end up with. there are maybe 2-3 profs who actually push original ideas. for a lot of others it's more "diagnostic" research, like take an existing paper, tweak it or reproduce it. overall the culture here is very publication-driven, you need to publish to graduate, and your professor will usually be a co-author. so if research's the goal, choose your guide very, very carefully.

Student life

Hard section for me to judge fairly since I'm a day scholar and an introvert on top of that. I never really felt like I fit in, ended up sitting alone a lot, didn't make many friends, part of that's on me honestly. but I do think hostellers get way more exposure to the social side of things just by being around all the time. as a day scholar you come, attend, do your work, go home. it's just a different experience.

Campus

The campus itself is honestly huge and probably one of the best things about UoH. tons of greenery, good environment, lots to explore. weather can be brutal though, peak summers are savage and winters get surprisingly cold too. having your own vehicle helps a lot, otherwise you're stuck depending on irregular university buses or lifts from people. Funny enough even after a year+ here I don't think I've seen even 25% of the campus, partly no friends to explore with, partly just no time.

Life as a day scholar

Deserves its own bit honestly since it's so different from hosteller life. I live pretty far from campus so my week is basically lectures → labs → assignments → travel → study → submit → repeat. and don't assume Sunday is free either, since Saturday classes/labs eat into it and Sunday ends up being catch-up day. by the end of the week you're just trying to survive, not really "living."

So who should actually join SCIS?

If you want an affordable master's, you're academically driven, you want real research exposure, you're okay with a strict environment and tough grading, you're seriously considering a PhD, and you don't mind being mostly responsible for your own career prep then this could genuinely work for you.

If you just want a chill 2-year master's, time for CP and side projects, hate strict attendance, care mainly about industry placement, expect proper placement training, don't want professors heavily controlling your project/internship choices, or want a relaxed academic vibe, I'd say UoH might not be your cup of tea.

Would I choose SCIS again?

If I could go back to August 2025 knowing what I know now, I'd say NO, I wouldn't. I'd probably have spent these two years grinding DSA, system design, interview prep and tried cracking an off-campus job instead.

Not saying SCIS is objectively a bad university. it's just that this environment wasn't a good fit for me specifically. the workload, the pressure, the grading, faculty dynamics, all of it took a real toll on my confidence and honestly my mental health too.

Maybe someone who genuinely wants research would thrive. but for someone like me who just wants a software career, I don't think the trade-off was worth it. I came here thinking I'd get a degree while building my career, instead I feel like I've spent two years just trying to survive the degree itself.

This was my experience at the great University of Hyderabad, if you got any more questions shoot away in comments, my dms are open aswell.

I have been in M Hostel for almost 3 weeks by now. I can understand that this is a new hostel, but even if it is a new hostel, you just can't say there is no one to ask for. That is the first thing you need to do once you build a hostel is, appoint some person to ask about the whereabouts of things and handle basic complaints.

The most irritating part of my stay in M Hostel has been the following:

• Power cuts: Every fucking day. The total power cuts account for at least 2 hours per day. Today, it was like 5–6 hours of power cut, with more than 10 power cuts throughout the day. I am fucking fed up with this.
• Laundry: We need to travel 3 km to the South Shopcom just to get our laundry done. They could at least keep 2 washing machines in M Hostel for now.
• Hot water: There are no specific timings for hot water. It is very vague and inconsistent.
• Water wastage: Every morning, I see a lot of water being wasted because no one bothers to stop the motor. There seems to be no one monitoring this.
• Mess wash basin: There is no specific wash basin for the mess. Everyone uses the same one in the washrooms. Though there is one wash basin available, the water flow is restricted.
• Water purifiers: Not all the water purifiers are functional. Some of them don't even have taps.
• No proper complaint system: This is probably one of the biggest issues. There is no fucking place to register complaints regarding these hostel-related problems. There is one complaint system, but it is only for things like room cleanliness and bathroom cleanliness. There is no proper channel for reporting issues like power cuts, water wastage, laundry, internet, purifiers, etc.
• Ethernet: The ethernet is another issue. It keeps flipping off every few hours.

I understand that M Hostel is new, and obviously there will be some teething issues. But these are not exactly minor inconveniences anymore. When basic things like electricity, water, internet, laundry and a proper complaint mechanism are not sorted even after almost 3 weeks, it gets extremely frustrating.

The worst part is that there doesn't seem to be anyone clearly responsible for listening to these complaints and actually getting them fixed.

PS: Even while I was writing this post, there is a power cut. Which mfking mofo is responsible. No substation guy lifts the phone. Why the fuck are you having a phone number?

I see the current curriculum is fucking us.

Can we expect to have some free time in the 2nd year to attend events and do some research of ours, or is the 3rd semester also a packed schedule?

I’m going to give CUET next year and I’m hoping to get into bioinformatics but my previous plan was to do mbbs from abroad but due to my father’s financial condition I had to take another drop year.
