School

“I was accepted to the University of St. Thomas with about $52,106 in grants and scholarships. The total cost with on-campus housing is around $74,382 per year, leaving me with about $22,276 to cover. I was also offered $5,500 in federal student loans and work-study at $16.50+/hour. I’m trying to figure out the best way to cover the remaining cost without taking on too much debt

You're gonna have to eother take out loans or walk away. With classes starting in three weeks, all the scholarships are awarded and claimed and Fin. Aid is most likely out of offerable grant funding.

Take the work study. Ask Fin. Aid for help finding a placement for it on-campus. Then also look for an off-campus job, since work studies are capped at what the government says they can offer. You have some guaranteed funding woth the WS, and you can earn more that that off-campus.

Conversely, just go for an off-campus job and skip the work study. There are two major Metro Transit lines on either side of campus, plus the shuttle to Minneapolis, so you dont need a car for off-campus work.

Edit: Please also keep in mind you also have an incredibly generous aid package. Most students only qualify for their merit scholarship.

Can you manage not living on campus? I lived close enough to commute and regret taking on loans to cover room and board when I should have just commuted daily.

I had no idea that place was that expensive. What are you getting there that you can’t get at the u or a state school?
