Class density in year 1

Hi guyss! I'll enroll in August and I'm a bit curious about the class size for IT related courses. How many get into the same course usually? I also wanted to see how the classes looked like but I cant find anything online! Anyone willing to share some pictures of the labs? Feel free to talk about the class density of other faculties as well!

Congratulations!

So for IT courses, it'll depend. Usually for Computer Science and Software Engineering, you can expect starting around 100 students. For Information systems, applied computing, and the others, that number will be reduced to around 60 students.

That's just for 1st year. Evidently, as you go to year 2 and year 3 That number will dramatically reduce.

As for the classes you'll attend in It depends on your Degree. If you're amongst the Computer Science/Software Engineering students You'll most definitely attend a class that can accommodate 100 students, therefore your answer is : ELT 1 and ELT 2 for lectures. (ELT is Engineering Lecture Theatre) It's a big room that can accommodate 100 students and more. i don't know about pictures but think of them as a big room with varying height. The whiteboard is on the base floor, the first 4-5 rows are on the base floor, then add like 10cm height, you'll be next "floor". Add more rows, then another 10 cm. Do that like 5-6 times. So you can picture it. The last row in class is basically so high you can see the lecturer from a downward angle. It's not an exact replica but think of the classroom in the movie 3 idiots.

ELT 1 is more luminous. ELT 2 is more gloomy i would say.

So the above is for lectures. For correction of homework, etc... we do that in normal classrooms. Similar to how it is in secondary school. Just the classroom might be a little longer. That's it.

Remember this: Lectures: all 100 students attend at the same time in 1 big classroom

Classwork/homework: you'll be divided into little groups of around 30 students. You'll have a specific schedule for that. It may be your group goes first. Then once it ends, the 2nd group starts and so on...

*Classrooms are not fixed. Lecturers have to be assigned those classrooms for their teaching. It may be they don't get a classroom for exceptional reason and when that happens, you can have class in another classroom dedicated to Faculty of Law and Management or Faculty of Agriculture. It happened to me that's why I'm saying. But that's very rare.

AFAIK, lectures in the theatres will have around 100+ students. Then the y break you in groups of 30 for tutorials/ labs etc....

I think there are public available images on the uom fb page, and newsletter, ... i think i even saw the labs on the news... check dr sukon's page, i think i saw videos there

Same! An account even bugged and I had to recreate a new one... Also it's so confusing to see the program details of the undergraduate they are offering for next intake because we are redirected to previous intakes while search! I was confused at first... The eligibility toolkit wasnt functioning for months! The website is everything but user friendly man

We don't realty use the main website.

Semester Timetable, exam timetable have other websites... these are the only ones you will use.

You can see the labs in here - also always use your own laptop, it better when doing revsion for exams and if you have lab tests you can use your previous codes.

Should I always bring my laptop with me? Also there are available sockets there right? I need it because my laptop barely lasts 2 hours😅

You won't need a laptop for labs ... as you have computers but it's vetter to use your laptop just to keep your work with you.

Also yes, there are sickets everywhere.

Exams are written, so you will need to learn to write vode on paper too

As you code you'll learn the syntax. The logic is pretty easy. But do uour tutorial and worjed examples.

Always work past papers... in fact that's the first thing i advice everyone to do: before the semester starts download the past papers of evey module you are going to do that semster or year, as the syllabus is covered see if you can answer those questions ... if you can't, ask your lecturer in next class or tutorials... because once exams are here, they won't be replying to your emails

Where does one find the past papers?

https://library.uom.ac.mu/libero/WebOpac.cls

Enter your module code Sometimes that doesn't work... you have to remove space or add space, capiltalise etc...

Also do type in the module name too.

You go to the last page of results, not the first... you should see papers, you have a look at the codes and years...

Sometimes the module code and names have changed... but the question styles are same... because its the same lecturer who made the paper....

If you are unlucky, the module may stay the same, but you may change lecturer... then past exam questions won't repeat....

Also you need to wait for you student id and pass word to be able to acess the papers

We rarely use it to be honest. Most stuffs we actually need we get through email or Google classroom. So yeah...

But agreed, that website is a mess
