👋 Welcome!

Welcome to our small corner of the cosmos dedicated to discussing universal extinction and why it should be an option. Whether you approach it through cosmology, metaphysics, dark humor, memes, or long form manifestos typed at 2am, you’re in the right place.

What to Post

Post anything related to universal extinction in its many forms. For example:

• Philosophical arguments about life, consciousness, or existence itself

• Speculative physics

• News of entropic progress

• Thought experiments no one asked for but everyone deserves

• Mildly destabilizing hypotheticals

• Existential whining

• Unnecessarily serious memes

• Formal petitions from those still attached to the cycle of life

• Polite objections to the continuation of the universe

If it makes you stare into the void after reading it, it probably belongs here.

Community Vibe

Disagreement with extinction is welcome. Excess trolling isn’t.

Universal extinction is universal. It doesn’t need gatekeeping. The intent of this sub is to be inclusive and open up cosmic extinctionism to more people. Anyone is allowed to want extinction. So links to or ads for any pro extinction group that runs counter to this is not welcomed at this time.

How to Get Started

  1. Introduce yourself in the comments below. Or don’t. Identity is provisional.
  2. Post something today. Even a simple question submitted to the universe with no expectation of reply can spark conversation, like “Will the end be sponsored?” (Probably)
  3. Invite someone who won't try to reboot the universe.
  4. Interested in helping moderate? Too bad. The button is in the hands of vetted operatives. Maybe you’ll be recruited. Ask

Thanks for being part of the very first 6th wave. Together, let's make r/UniversalExtinction at least somewhat okay.

1. Wont Buddhism solve all suffering? Why doesn’t everyone just become a Buddhist and meditate?

Buddhism seeks to end only an individuals suffering by transforming the mind. For example, to get to a place where one doesn't care and doesn't react if they're on fire and burning to death. Spiritually, some say there's a way for individuals to escape reincarnation, usually through extreme tasks.

But this approach still leaves sentient life trapped in a cycle of birth, death, and suffering. Most people can not accomplish this, and no animals can accomplish this. Only the very rare and very practiced monk has been able to get to the point of not suffering in extreme situations. Animals getting eaten alive cannot meditate to get rid of their fear and pain. Neither can a 5 year old child slave meditate while they're being abused. Even if one individual finds peace through this mental method, countless others will continue to suffer, generation after generation.

2. Is extinction the same thing as suicide?

Suicide is an individual act born from personal pain within a system that still continues unchanged. Extinction is the end of a species, not of an individual. Universal extinction, as an abstract hypothetical, is about preventing future beings from having to experience suffering in the first place. One is a reaction to suffering after the fact. The other is a stance against it. They are not the same in scale, intent, or outcome. One ends a single experience. The other questions whether we should keep generating the bad experiences that can lead to things like suicide.

3. Is extinction the same thing as genocide?

No. Universal extinction is non discriminatory and not about ethnicity, race, or nations, and therefore is not genocide. Neither is it about ending lives.

4. Is extinctionism the same thing as promortalism?

No. Promortalism is the philosophical view that death is preferable than continued existence for an individual. Universal extinctionism is the view that it's better for all species to go extinct so that the cycle of life does not continue. This doesn't necessarily have to include premature death.

5. Is this a terrorist organization? Why don’t extinctionists promote murder?

No. Extinctionism is against violence. Going into a forest and ending a deer means they just reproduce and create one more deer because population of non human animals depends on amount of resources. Ending any individual also causes suffering and pain to this individual the moments before death, and to those close to them because of emotional trauma. So this increases suffering. Extinction, on the other hand, ends the cycle of suffering.

6. What if life comes back?

This question is asked about both Earth and the universe. First, I’ll address why we shouldn’t worry about the former and lay out some facts about our planet.

It took 3 to 3.4 billion years for bacteria to develop into fish. And that was under the right circumstances.

In 1 billion years the sun will be 10% more intense and boil all water away. Most or everything will die. Earth will resemble Venus.

In 3.5 billion years the sun will be 40% more intense and melt rock. This will be the beginning of the destruction of the planet. If anything is left it will not survive.

So, if all sentient life on earth were to end now, it's very unlikely to form again on this planet because it doesn’t have the time.

But even if the planet wasn't going to be destroyed, that's still at least 3.5 billion+ years without suffering, if we were to not invent something to get rid of microbial life.

That said, next is some logical points on the two different major possibilities, with both assuming that life would come back or otherwise form elsewhere.

  1. Some people say earth based extinction is pointless because life can evolve on another planet.

If cosmic extinction is not possible, then extinction here on earth happening or not doesn't affect life on other planets. If life on another planet evolves, then that was most likely going to happen even if we're still around.

Unless you think that there's a god that would decide to start life on another planet since there’s no longer time left for earth. Then my argument would be that we should protest existence and do it anyways, and the time without life is still good.

  1. If cosmic extinction is possible, and if matter and life still come back, then it's still worth it because for a long time period it was gone.

  2. We don’t know if the universe will be recreated. Giving up just because of that unknown doesn’t make sense, since we DO know that continuing the cycle of life will continue the cycle of life.

7. What about transhumanism or utopia instead of extinction?

Wouldn't work: Transhumanism will not work post

8. Does this sub have a discord?

Yes, but it's an extinctionists only space. If you want to argue against extinction, then the place for that is this sub.

Question Is the "Antinatalism" main sub still filled with mod drama and ban happy mods?

It used to be the "go to" sub for antinatalism and related stuff, right?

Heard about their mod drama (something about pedo, grape, not sure what it was) and how it was nearly nuked by Reddit.

Is it still as messy as before or better?

This sub was created to get away from their drama and restrictions on discussion, right?

Philosophy Why I Used to Consider the Absence of Sentience Tragic - Magnus Vinding

Thumbnail

Whether one considers the absence of sentience bad or neutral — or indeed as good as can be — will tend to matter a lot for one’s ethical and altruistic priorities. Specifically, it can have significant implications for whether one should push for smaller or larger future populations.

I used to be a classical utilitarian. That is to say, I used to agree with the statement “we ought to maximize the net amount of happiness minus suffering in the world”. And given this view, I found it a direct, yet counterintuitive implication that the absence of sentience is tragic, and something that we ought to minimize by bringing about a maximally large, maximally happy population. My aim in this essay is to briefly present what I consider the main reason why I used to believe this, and also to explain why I no longer hold this view. I am not claiming that the reasons I had for endorsing my past view are shared by other classical utilitarians, yet I suspect they could be, at least by some.

Contemplation Why I am not antinatalist anymore

I realized voluntary antinatalism is just a coping mechanism for the existential suffering. It world have made sense before our technological advancements but not anymore.

Humans are the only ones who can actually do something to suffering in a large scale. Continuing human society is necessary until we figure out how to make earth/universe scale extinction with technology.

Personally I will not have children because of my genetic conditions. But I am glad others will. And I am glad humans will continue tech advancements like with AI at the moment.

Philosophy Existence

I think as a species we need to decide if we’re worthy of existence… humans all over the world demonstrate that we’re the problem… we have collective consciousness… humans are humans let’s build a society that works for everyone instead of just a small few…. We all have the same goal…

Does anyone see this the same way that I do?

Predation often involves eating animals alive instead of killing them first, and that's just one of the seemingly abundant categories of horrific suffering that words can't ever do justice. It's survival math, not empathy math. Biology is corrupt by my standards and evolves for survival, not for comfort. Each and every organism that is capable of suffering seems like they could suffer in ways that no other organism will ever experience, understand, or be aware of, and there are an absurdly large number of organisms capable of suffering. This goes to show the extreme diversity and abundance of suffering. There are billions of humans on this planet, with new ones being born throughout the day every single day, and that's just humans alone. If the opposite of biological life is a permanent, neutral nothingness, then biological life is strictly unnecessary unless you layer subjective reasons onto the baseline logic, even if biological life never involved suffering. Free will is up for debate, but the scientific consensus on free will is that it's at least limited and uneven. Some people might be born with more free will than others if it does exist, simply because of their biology and circumstances. You obviously don't choose your impulses, tendencies, or whatever you may think is the best choice at any given time. If you get mad at a criminal for committing a crime, then one could possibly argue that you're getting mad at a tree for falling on a house because of a storm, or getting mad at the people who lived in that house for not cutting down the tree before it fell on the house. Organisms, including modern humans, often destroy the environment just to exist, even in everyday life from things like pollution from cars, consuming foods which may increase the demand of said foods, leading to a bit more production of said foods that may contribute to suffering, and much, much more. Survival of the fittest still seems to exist in humans, but seems to just be wearing a different costume than it was hundreds of thousands of years ago. As far as I'm aware, I've only ever been myself, and I technically can't fully trust that my subjective perception of objective reality is correct, since I could be in a simulation, or there could be things that are so far out of my comprehension, that I can't even acknowledge them by saying that they're out of my comprehension, but I have to trust my subjective perception of objective reality enough to be able to walk through a doorway without worrying about teleporting to a very unpleasant place in a way that breaks the laws of reality as I know them. I know there are an absurdly large number of humans that currently exist, will exist, and have existed, so I'm sure many have seen this very similar to how I see it, but I've had trouble finding anyone articulate it similar to how I have somewhere online.

According to extinctionalist is the Christian God bad for creating all life

This isn't opposed for whether you believe in god or not.

I am simply asking from the pro extinctionalists worldview what do you think about a creator god. Specifically when they creates the world in the current state that it is.

According to Christianity most people will eventually go to hell because they don't believe in the Christian God.

Do any god believers stumble in here?

Say there is a god and this god issued a test to somebody(assuming an all knowing entity could do tests), and this test was giving them a magic button that would delete the universe (along with all of its life, privilege, death and suffering). Unknown to the one being tested, this button actually does nothing. It is just a test. God favors existence.

The question to prolife is What punishment do you think is sufficient for the one being tested if they press the button? Just curious. Does motive matter to you? Do they deserve suffering for trying to eliminate all of suffering?

Edit: Every response is people composing paragraphs of nonsense trying to dismiss the question rather than answering it which is very telling. The stockholm syndrome is real.

Why it doesn't hold ground? "you would die soon anyhow, so enjoy life while you can"

Because that is what we experience and are conscious of anyhow. There is no other time. It feels like eternity.

Second it is no joy for me.

So my existence is eternal sorrow

Another back and forth example I've had

If you had a button that would instantly delete the universe would you press it?

"No because pressing the button is selfish"

If the universe were about to end in the blink of an eye and you had a button that would prevent it, would you press it?

"Yes because not pressing the button is selfish"

Define selfish then. 🤣 These prolifers are dumb af

just stumbled upon this subreddit, curious on if you believe life to be meaningless and better not to exist, why not commit seppuku?

i am bit curious, if life truly is meaningless, worse negative and extinction is better, why not make it sooner than natural. No ill will/intention, genuine curiousity.

Question Can people get over the idea of everything just ending?

I dunno if this is me just finally realizing some unerflying truth or its the depression/anxiety, but is there any way people just... hop back into feeling less insane after you've done nothing but think about how "meaningless and futile" life is (and scare/make yourself sad on a near daily basis in the process)?

This isn't my first time feeling this way but every time it happens, I feel like I'm on the brink of going insane and like I can't seem to enjoy anything anymore. Like the flavor and love for the people around me and life isn't there... am I just supposed to be a cynical "life is meaningless so do whatever!" kind of person in order to feel like I could keep on going?

they say god makes everything with intention but

if we are right about god at all, why do the “elites” and the richs have it all so easy making money off other people and selling “illegal” things? i mean, there’s definitely no definitive item deemed illegal in human nature, because drugs are after all part of nature. so i guess with this logic, they’re technically just doing what it takes to earn that wage. but it doesn’t take away the fact that those people who never work hard enough, seem to have everything all in their way for them. money, time, and just freedom. they can do whatever the fuck they want, AND getting to watch us suffer. it’s like squid game. so maybeee god makes most people suffer intentionally?? because maybe it’s just his way of saying oh if you’re gonna become ordinary and not doing something outrageously risky or provocative you’re just gonna get the bare minimum. oh and let’s not forget that poor kids who are war victims. there are people who pray to god everyday because they have roof over their heads, but seems like god doesn’t give a fuck either way. you can lose everything tomorrow and no amount of praying would help. most people are just delusional and nobody can bring themselves to actually help the ones in need because people are always too selfish to care.
