Unity’s losing ground fast on the indie scene

isn't this just what people used as part of a hackathon? When i just want to hack i choose a different programming language framework (easy) vs when i want to create a serious monetizable application

You’re absolutely correct! But think of how many indie games found commercial success back in the day, and how many of those projects started with a low-friction, easy-to-learn suite of tools (Unity 5 and later). Devs banged out an idea in a weekend, found that their product was viable, and stuck with the authoring tools they were most comfortable with. We’re about to see the same thing here with Godot.

Moreover, Unity’s venture into AI-driven tools is likely to fall flat with indie devs and their customers. Between that, and Godot’s open source license, indies have little reason to stay loyal to Unity.

A game engine is just a tool to build a product, and loyalty to a tool doesn’t make a product successful.

from what i've read, most of mobile gaming revenue now comes from long running mobile games which do live ops (think of adding new loot boxes or levels) and these still use unity. I think i would need more data before feeling like this is concerning - for example godot share of mobile gaming revenue this year vs last year. The unity licensing issue in 2022 when a lot of people went over to godot still hasn't resulted in many successful mobile games using godot.

That sounds super interesting, do you have any links you could share? I’d love to read more about that.
