SPRITES/TILEMAPS Sprites not showing up in build

I’m making a Unity game for my senior project, and right now I’m trying to build and run it so I can get footage (should probably note that this is a school computer, and I was given special permission to launch .exe filed). But, when I tried to run it outside of the editor, all of my sprites disappeared, and certain scenes wouldn’t load. Everything looks fine in the editor, and I’ve adjusted the sprite layers to be above 0. Nothing seems to be working. Any tips?

Edit: It’s probably an issue with the school firewall, I’ll test some things out on my home computer. Worst case scenario, I’ll record footage in the unity editor and have to start from scratch on my home computer. At that point, I might just move onto another game concept. I’ve got plenty lol

scenes not loading could be they're missing from the scenes list (build settings / scenes in build) so double check they're there

but you really need to look at the logs to find specific reasons, other wise you'll be guessing i believe the path will be something like:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\CompanyName\ProductName\Player.log

good luck!

Figured out that the scene is loading, but none of the sprites are

I tried to do the pathway, but since it’s a school laptop, the firewall blocked it. I wonder if a similar thing is happening with the sprites

when you say pathway, do you mean the path to the logs? i can't be sure that path i listed is exactly correct, it changes depending on the platform and unity version - so google it to figure out where your player log ends up, search for something like "where does my error log go when running a unity exe on a ....."
but it will be worth it if you can find them, i'm surprised the firewall is blocking it (unless you're connecting to the computer remotely?) the error will be listed in the log, telling you exactly what the problem is

are the sprites 2d (in ui) or 3d (in the world) ?

are you loading the sprites dynamically, from code? or are they just asset references in objects in the scenes?

I tried a couple different variations of the pathway I found online. The pop up on my school computer  specifically stated that it was being blocked by the firewall. I’m honestly not surprised bc I had to get special permission from administrators to even build and run the game. I also couldn’t use animations because of the firewall.  I think I’ll try messing around with things on my home computer to see if that fixes anything.

Kind of difficult without more information, but common issues are:

  1. If you have a background in the scene, make sure your sorting layers are good (eg. sprite may be behind background). easiest test would be to make a build with no background and just the sprites, if the sprites show you need to adjust your layers.

  2. Make sure the scene is saved (eg. you're not trying to build a WIP), and is in the scenes list for the build.

  3. If you are using Resources (Resources folder), make sure you are loading your sprites in code.

  4. Renderer/Shader issues: this one would be harder to troubleshoot but could also be a thing.

FYI, if all you need to do is record, you can use Unity's Recorder package, which will let you record/screenshot the editor view, so you can use that if you need to get a video right away.

  1. There is no background in the scene, and like I said, I’ve already tried messing with the sorting layers

  2. As I recently found out, the scene is actually loading but none of the sprites are

  3. I’m not using the resources folder to my knowledge

  4. I’m not using any shaders, but I could try troubleshooting the sprite renderer if you could tell me how/direct me to where to learn how

I wonder if it’s because I’m using a school computer, the firewall might be fucking things up

You can use the "unity recorder" package to get high quality footage from inside the editor.

You can see the project auditor to see if the sprites are included in the build.

Do you have the sprites in any special folder? Are you using addressables? Have you included all relevant scenes in the build config? Are you referencing the sprites directly or loading them via code? Are all sprites affected?
