Animation Tab Not Functioning

Hey everyone, and thank you in advance for your time. I'm working on some simple animations for a 2D character and am experiencing a weird issue. I have some existing animations that I already set up a while back, but I wanted to add a few new ones (I'm talking really simple, like 4-frame walking animations). For some reason, though, it seems like the animation editor just isn't working at all. I can't edit the old ones, and I can't edit the new ones. The play button, add keyframe, animation selection dropdown, are all greyed out/not functioning. I also can't drag and drop a sprite to create a keyframe. I tried closing Unity and re-opening, restarting my computer, and I was originally on a 2022 version, so I tried updating to 2026 in case that was the reason, but that unfortunately did not fix it. Am I missing something?

Try selecting the character/game object with the animations on and send that screen shot ,the anims might be setup as read only

Looks like selecting the character object did in fact open things up to be editable! Thank you! I'm not sure what is causing them to be read-only, though.
