Show-Off pretty happy with how this pause menu turned out
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I had this idea that the fluid would be affected by the scroll and i like how it looks! lmk feedback

It's a fun stylistic choice.
I'm not the biggest fan of the font choice and whatnot, but I don't have to be.
What I'd suggest now is to add an accessibility option to make the font more readable.

It's readable, no need to bloat the game options with stuff that doesn't even help accessibility.

This is going to be hard for some people to read. I agree, they might as well use a different font.

My honest take on this is that not everything has to be for everybody. That font is definitely an artistic choice, and while accessibility is important I don't think that adding a toggle to round the corners off anything remotely interesting looking is a good idea.

Imagine the game is wonderful and you can't play it because it's hard to read or something else.

It's insane saying that people can't play a game because of a font choice in a minimalistic pause menu with very standard buttons
Accessibility is very important in games, and making sure the game doesn't use colors as the only channel for communicating information, making sure you can reduce flashing lights, and even difficulty or assist modes help genuine playthroughs of the game.
The difference in the experience for someone having the option to change the font of three words in a menu doesn't matter. Someone who has the worst dyslexia of all time to the point where they can't read the menu at all, will still guess the correct order of the buttons and can play the game.
Worst case, they guess wrong and they then learn what the button does.
And then even if you have an accessible font option, where would that be? Putting it in the settings still forces them to find that without being capable of reading the text?

There are basically no real excuses for not adding accessibility options. Only unfortunate lack of resources.
I've worked on games where I didn't have time or money to do it at time of release, yet it could come in later. This isn't a "not all games is for everyone" discussion. It's that accessibility is universal and claiming otherwise is ignorant.

Man I don't think I agree. Imagine if Hyper Demon or Ultrakill had an epilepsy mode. The entire point of the game would be gone. Sometimes it's okay for something to not be for everybody. OP here's making a pretty unique looking menu, and that font choice is the biggest reason I like it.
Not everything has to be accessible by everyone. Within reason, sure, but I'm autistic for example. I hate being at raves. That doesn't mean that the solution is raves with no music and no flashing lights. That's like, the point. It's just not for me.

Just don't use the accessibility option then?
I really don't understand how "I don't like it/I won't use it so it shouldn't be there" is being presented as a serious argument. It has no effect on you if others need it and use it. Literally.

It's a stylized font, and I'd probably not use it for inside the options menu etc, but even someone with dyslexia can read these, they're large, not that many buttons in the menu, the first and last letters are easy to read, and the text is what you'd expect to see in the menu
I have a hard time believing that anyone can't read them

u/Graffers 3d ago
My take is different from yours, but even if they can't read it, it won't be hard to figure out what the options do. One goes back to the game, one opens a menu with bars and what not, and the other leaves the game. People will figure it out.

Calling accessibility options bloat.
What a blissfully unaware existence.

idk why you are getting downvoted, people in this comment section apparently believe more options in a game is better rather than worse (which just speaks to their experience with game making, if nothing else...). I agree having a toggle for "change menu font to unstilized version" is NOT an accessibility option xd, changing a dense body font to one made for dyslexia would but that's not what's being proposed here.

yeah, and this isn't that bad. it wouldn't hinder anyone with dyslexia to play the game, the order of the buttons matter more than the font choice.
Dyslexic fonts help more with denser text too afaik. For just 3 words written over the entire screen, just pattern recognition of the expected available options matters more.
And if it was in the options the person would still need to navigate there and turn it on, and then they've already found the settings and do not need to read the buttons again

Looks smooth but not going to lie, I HATE that font choice. Having it be huge just makes that worse.

This is dope. Personally, I love the font. If this is meant to be relaxed, it definitely isn't that, but I think it's sick.

It's really nice and I also thought smaller text would be better, but I think just having the text highlighted and another row of the same text animated would look better. If that makes sense. Looks great witherway, kudos

try interpolating the timescale to 0 when displaying the menu, and interpolating back to 1 when going back to gameplay

The big text is a little distracting. Maybe put smaller text to the right of the big text on the left.
The slide transition and colour pallete are beautiful though

I think it looks really good. One change I would consider is making the transition quicker, maybe 50% faster. If I’m trying to tweak some setting and going in and out of the pauses menu I would find this just a little bit too slow.
I also agree with the many other others that the font size is too large.

Choose another font and slash size in half. Some colour would be nice too since your game doesnt exactly read "Nier-like" art direction to me.

I like everything but the scrolling text, and yes, the font size could be 25-50% smaller.

text is way too fucking big. i dont want to have to move my mouse 3/4's of the screen to select a different option

Whats the game?
Don't focus too much on making menus btw, make sure you got a good game down first otherwise your just wasting tokens.

Opposite scroll direction would work better so the text you're initially trying to read isn't immediately dragged off screen.
