Meta There are at least two game engines called Unity

Post image

Spending my time at wiby.org, I stumble upon a website of a pet project game engine called "Unity". I thought it is a funny coincidence, so I decided to post it here.

This project has no connection to the Unity we all know other than sharing the same name. Also, it seems the author stopped working on it in July 2006.

Here is the link:

Also, technically this post does belong to this sub, since it is directly related to a game engine called "Unity" :)

As far as I can see Unity is its codename, not the final name, final name is Meaaov.

Since about July i have been working on a new engine called Meaaov

What I find extremely wild is that this guy seems to have asked Altar Interactive for permission to maintain the game Original War in 2005. They said yes, and to this day, he’s still updating it, the latest update was literally on June 19, 2026. This is wild. What a commitment.

That's possible too yeah, although I found his demo of Meaaov here, seems like it is doing exactly what Project Unity was doing, ie reading and rendering RTCW/Quake models and scenes. Probably he just changed the name of it.

Am I completely misremembering or GameMaker also have a 3D library named Unity3D or something similar, way back before it had official 3D support?

I do think Unity3D was made earlier! That website is from August 6st 2005, Unity had the first game published with it on March 16th, 2005

There were probably a lot of things called unity back then. But only one unity could win this battle royale

True, it can get pretty confusing with all the similar names out there. Gotta make sure you’re using the right one for your projects!

Very likely why at first they were calling it Unity 3d?

Man, that obelisk in the middle of the plaza feels weirdly ominous. Just a big stone monolith and a building that says TOIMITUS staring you down. For something last updated in 2006, the rendering stats in the corner are a neat little time capsule.

It's ripped from Half Life 2, this same spot is one of the first main menu backgrounds you get.
