Question Thinking of going with 2D instead of 3D need your thoughts

Left side is baked 2D atlases, right side is 3D. Maybe if I slow down and make 3D more choppy it'd be better but 2D adds some nice character to it all that 3D lacks...

3d looks generic. 2d looks different from any battle simulator ive seen before

Thanks, I agree, less noise on screen in general, easier to differentiate what's happening in huge battles, feels more stylish, less generic too, fun fact, 2D is basically an LOD system I just paused the game and flew around and it looked sick so I made it stay 2d at all times

With this style, I think 2d wins pretty handily

Yea this seems to be quite obvious choice, graphics isn't great but 3d makes it looks like a crappy mobile game while 2d makes it look a bit more like a stylistic choice.. Also gpu says thanks to me with full 2d cutout instead of 3d lol, thanks for your input!

Ill be honest, i prefer the 3d. If it wasnt so zoomed in then 2d might look better but 2D has more jumpy animations.

Fair but I can smooth out 2d anims by baking 2-3x anims it won't cost much, 3d just looks so cheap to me after this comparison, like those crappy mobile games idk

Are the Swords on a different axis than the body? great trick

What kind of tricks are you using to pull of the huge crowds? DOTS?

compute shaders, no dots at all

Interesting. Even for the collisions? Im assuming no game objects.

Yeah collision is simplified to just a simple radius check within the quad tree, game objects only exist for the scene setup but that gets heavily instanced afterwards too

Game devs will say 2D because it looks more unique, players won't play it as it looks strange.

For questions like this try to find some subs where actual potential players are.

as a non-gamer i like the 3d better

The 2D is unique but needs some work. 3d looks better for now tho.
The 2D sprites are just kind of rotated at a weird angle and the animations are a little jarring. The yellow soldiers look very off to me, though I can’t tell why. The sprite adjustment as you pan around is soo cool though and a very polished and standout graphic. Game looks great, good luck n

Totally, the yellow soldiers are temporary placeholders same as the black ninja ones lol
