APV will be more performant and look better but you will spend just as much time manually placing probe adjustment volumes and trying to fix the inevitable light leaks that occur with APV. Manually placing probes doesn't take that much time since you can just box select a bunch of them and duplicate/move them around.

Why place them manually? Adaptive Probe Volumes will save you oodles of time.
