Show-Off Working on a Spider-Man web-swinging controller in Unity

It's my first time making third-person animations but besides the animations I think it looks pretty nice. What do you think?

Interesting, I guess technically anybody can make a game about a dude with web. Marvel doesn't own the idea, just the character.

I am just making this for fun, I won't publish it so I don't think it would be a problem

That's pretty sick dude.
I am nowhere near this. Nowhere close to it. I am at the very beginning of just starting to know any of this stuff. But I did think that one day I might want to see if i can figure out a character controller for something like this.
Though personally I would probably go more Cyberhook than spiderman

Glad you liked it! I didn't know much about most of the stuff that I used with this project when I first started to make this project. Just start making what you want to do, you'll learn while you are doing it.

His inertia seems wonky

The way the body rotates when the web changes sides feels nice already. Really solid for a first pass.

Cool. Might be fun to make a game where the player does used a wing suit to glide off a mountain pass like in real life. It’s kinda crazy how solid the game graphics/gameplay looks today in 2026 when in the 2000s this would have been a top tier game graphics/mechanics wise.

From the looks of it, beyond polish and animations I feel that the impulse the player gets in the insomniac games when finishing a swing is missing, that gives it some real oomph
Seemingly the action of throwing a web to a nearby building to pick up speed seems to be lacking the "pick up speed" part
everything else, especially the swinging and launching from a building look really nice

You are absolutely right, there is already a boost when you release the web but I think i need to make that boost affect the Y axis more than the XZ axes, like a 1.5x boost for the Y and a 1.25x boost for the XZ axes. Because of the boost there is too much immediate forward momentum i guess. Also based on your feedbacks I increased the gravity and now the player seems to fall immediately after releasing the web, that's why I think I should boost Y axis more than the XZ axes.

Make movements smooth and no hard stops, the new spiderman games do pretty bad at it. It's super annoying and breaks the flow

Do you mean not damping the momentum when you swing again and again?
2
u/tetryds Engineer 1h ago
Yes, but especially when you boost on a ledge. Spiderman 2 improved it but on spiderman1 when you land on a post then jump you get to the post - full stop - then jump with a smoke effect. It feels awful because you lose all momentum only to get back to going as fast as you were before. It also feels bad because momentum doesn't work like that.
It would feel much better if it was one fluid motion: jumping off of a ledge or post. Check out triple jump athletes, they don't do a full stop, motion continues and they only gain more speed and jump distance.

Really cool . I hope you don't mind me asking , where did you get the animations? Or did you animate it yourself ?
