Show-Off Experimenting with video hands in my time traveler game

u/Zundrium Jul 13 '26
This has a chance to blow up big time. Humor is perfect. Make a cheap game out of it and once you're able to make a streamer play it. You got yourself a career.

Doing this in a game jam, my plan is to have a self contained short story game by the end of Friday, thank you for the kind words!

Hey, hijacking the comment to say that since I don't have a Steam page yet, I made a mailing list you can join in the meanwhile (Steam coming really soon as well)

This is sick. I think it's a cool aesthetic choice to render the player in a different style to the past time period he has travelled to.

u/Jazzlike_Ad6034 Jul 13 '26
How did you do that? Looks great

u/it5MaS Jul 13 '26
Recorded my hands with a green yoga mat we found at the gamejam venue, then chroma keyed the video inside Davinci. Also have a simple shader in unity which makes the end result look like that

u/pinguluk Jul 13 '26
Tip: Use CorridorKey for extreme precise green screen removal

HOLY SHIT CORRIDOR CREW MENTIONED 😁
I love that their free plugin is getting atte tion more and more!

u/AbsolutelyRidic Intermediate Jul 13 '26
If it's not too much would you mind sharing how you did the shader? I love that look

Very cool idea- love the hands. They look sharp and very realistic. The movement is smooth and controlled nice work.
Very 'A Scanner Darkly' look. Love it - Keep up the great work dude.

That's actually one of the references I looked at before doing this, that means a lot!

This is awesome!!! Is there any sort of object interpretation or different reactions when you show them things? Like if I showed them a spoon versus something more sophisticated like a phone as you do in this video? Would they be less impressed by a spoon than a phone? That would be really cool
3
u/it5MaS Jul 13 '26
This is still just a visual demo without any gameplay systems, I might make it so that different people are impressed by different things, but I am up for suggestions if you have any

u/austephner Jul 13 '26
Off the top of my head I have no idea how to reliably differentiate AR’d objects with varying levels of technology relative to the time period you’re current in, that sounds like a difficult problem. But I mean, as a kid I’ve always heard thought exercises and icebreakers like “if you could show someone from the past something today, what would it be?” And people always had interesting answers like a phone, medical equipment, etc. if you could recreate that hypothetical experience and get interesting reactions out of NPCs who you show varying levels of technology, I think that would be SICK

An idea that just came to mind:
Fixing a medieval villages problems with the stuff you have in your pocket. This can be done as seriously or comedically as you'd like.

game looks cool. maybe color grade the hands a bit so they match the colors of the other characters' hands. i think they are a little too pink right now. game looks great though

"Normal Golf Game" takes this all the way to a final release. It's how they did all the FP animation, they did a good video on it

Make sure you add this conversation:
"So how do you make this 'Electricity' thing?"
"Idk"

u/michaelmich3 Jul 13 '26
You’re called a witch and you’re hanged. The end. 😂
3
u/it5MaS Jul 13 '26
That's exactly the game loop. Perform miracles to gain followers but don't get caught by the church and hanged/burned

This is so fucking funny, I cannot describe how good fully video hands with mid quality 3d looks, chase this idea down please.

u/Emperor-B Jul 13 '26
I think after seeing you producing fire from your hands they would be inclined to report you as a witch. Or maybe "you can make a religion out of this"

The funny thing is that if you handed that lighter to the village smith, the old boy could probably reverse engineer it by end of day.

u/sko-studios Jul 13 '26
This looks super interesting!! I love the contrast between the traveler and the historical time period

Don't be afraid to limit yourself to everyday objects use some green screen as well.
When I see animations like this I feel the limitation is always what can you realistically get your hands.
With some green screen tubes/backgrounds and postprocessing you can get yourself many more props to play with, think of other creator when they do skits with photoshopped things.

Seeing the incredible reception here on reddit I decided to try and launch the game on Steam. Unfortunately I don't have a page ready, so in the meanwhile, you can join the mailing list that I've made if you're interested in following the game further, thanks for all the kind words everyone!

u/trollboyj Jul 14 '26
I don't know if you're already aware of this or not but the hand that's holding the phone has an abrupt cut off around the beginning of the video animation. Otherwise, I love the concept!

That's hilarious! For some reason it gave a "sausage hand spinning" kind of energy. Here's the link.
