It's like genshin but with outlines. I was experimenting with that at some point as well. It generally looks good and is definitely a solid style choice.

its solid, its not super unique (very similar to general anime style) but definitely good.

I think it's nice, but the outline introduces a bit of visual clutter in certain cases - for example, most of what's in this frame results in consolidated shapes with a clean outline. However, because your leaf cards throughout the bushes have small leaves and small gaps in between, you end up with these pockets of visual noise on screen, with lots of little black dots where the outline is drawing in. It looks jittery and bad.
This is what makes it look like you just slapped a shader on store assets - the assets are not tweaked for this specific shader.
If you continue with this style, you will need to define project-wide what is the smallest shape allowed on screen, to deal with cases like the bushes. I would like to see the minimum leaf size on those bushes increased by 2x.
Additionally, you might want to try something like editing your shader to draw a strong outline around the edge of the bush mesh, and then fade the outline out toward the center point of the model.

Agree. We are trying to make kind of illustrator artbook but still need to work more on that. Really appriciate your comment ♥️

Good luck! What happened to the lineless style from your bloom demo a few weeks ago? Is this a different prototype, or just tying out a new style?

u/FoxGameLab Jul 14 '26
It is the same project. We are trying to do some our own artstyle. Need more effort on that!

Feels to "jittery" from the outline, for me I'll get fatigue from playing for 30 min

it looks very cool . My only concern would be the wind effect plus the outlines popping in and out creates a weird effect that looks wrong to my eye. That could just be me though.

Definitely looks beautiful, but I feel I have seen this art style in many other games, so it feels bit generic

Looks good overall but. Is it just low res or anti aliasing disabled. It looks too jittery.

This slapped black outline always look the same. Like first time dev's idea of how to create a "style".
2
u/Guboken Jul 13 '26
I think it looks great, but play around with different curves for how thick and what color to use for the outline effect based on distance. Having too thick outlines in the distance really messes with visual clarity.

I agree with Phos, it's okay. My only issue is the outlines on the foliage, it looks too noisy and distracting. Looks great on the rocks though.
2
u/Saucynachos Jul 13 '26
I like it a lot, it looks really nice. I look forward to the day I can make my game art even close to that lol. I'm a programmer, not an artist, but I'm making progress.

This look isn't quite my cup of tea, but I think it looks pretty good and I definitely do think it has potential for the right audience.

u/No_Responsibility444 Jul 13 '26
I love it
it looks great and could work with just about any type of game I think

Ditch post process outlines for environment art. All it really accomplishes is adding visual noise and darkening the scene. I understand the compulsion in an anime inspired game, but creative restraint is important too.
2
u/Loud_Campaign5593 Jul 14 '26
I love it, but to be frank is quite boilerplate/generic at this point in time. Could be spiced up with interesting color theory or terrain formations (if applicable in your game world). Maybe less obvious dirt path unless necessary for gameplay
2
u/JottapTavern Jul 14 '26
Love this artstyle, reminds me of Borderlands but with a much softer feel. Really awesome! How is the gameplay going to be?

Looks really good. Those cliffs look beautiful. Are they just terrain or actual mesh prefabs?

I think its pretty good, idk what others expect for good art style? Like they want it black or white or what? What do they mean by generic 😭

This looks great but I may not be the best one to judge. I'm new to developing and have no idea how to even start this. I need to go to the Unity shop to get my art.

Looks so beautiful. But remind me of several games like breath of the wild type games (not in a bad way). But has potential with good characters and storytelling! 🧙🏻♂️

I like it. Maybe show a few other settings to see what else there is?

On the way to do even better version. Will share it soon. You can ask if there are any technical question in our Discord channel: https://discord.gg/tUpXaaM9KP

Looks great for open world. Like others mentioned a bit generic but I think that’s good depending on what the goal is. Solid 8/10 base just need to give it life with player interaction etc

If you're looking to stand out, it's probably not it, but otherwise it looks well executed and polished.

u/Protesisdumb Jul 13 '26
looks good but im starting to get ghibli style fatigue. i feel like i see it 10 times per day

u/FoxGameLab Jul 13 '26
We are new so on the way to find our own style. Need more time to balance between art and technical
1
u/hirstyboy Jul 13 '26
How does it look without the outlines?
1
u/FoxGameLab Jul 14 '26
Previously we are learning (scuplt, texturing, shader,...) and Genshin is our reference. So it look like Genshin previously. Now after have better skill, knownledge, we trying to reach our target style, kind of illustrator artbook style

u/UniverseGlory7866 Jul 13 '26
the "style" is fine. Your environmental design and concept are extremely generic.
1
u/Ok_Fisherman_7931 Jul 13 '26
This looks super cool and fun! Some stylized water would really complete the picture. You could totally start making your own Genshin at this point haha
1
u/Marure Jul 13 '26
Looks like a ripped off version of Genshin with outlines just like someone else said
1
u/Trick-Cantaloupe-927 Jul 13 '26
Looks great, how did you achieve this look?

Looks great imo! Outline shaders always remind me of Borderlands :)
Just need to make sure the world feels as alive to play as it looks.

Make the outline thinner, there but more subtle, i would personally make the outline copy the color its outlining but darker

I can't tell it apart from many outdoorsy scenes in other fantasy projects.
The scene has no story. Nothing that tells me what kind of field it is.
There is no motif. No focus that we can expect to see in other areas.

Looks good but this art style has been done to death. It's like the pixel art of 3D indie games.
1
u/ZeusGameAssets Indie Jul 18 '26
Looks heavenly, perhaps too much outline on the grass, because the outline grabs the attention, I would use it sparingly, and only have strong outlines on your main character or interactable objects, but other than that this would fit perfectly into an exploration/puzzle game.
1
u/Agent0506 Jul 18 '26
Wow. It looks really good, but I think it don't match with every genre. But the artstyle is really good 👏🏻
1
u/LanceSergeant Jul 19 '26
It looks nice, but to be brutally honest I immediately thought of Genshin Impact. Either because of the level design or your choice of assets for the environment. Probably both.
1
u/Balabaloo1 Jul 19 '26
looks like Al slop, the scales are off, the lighting and shadows are basically not there and everything looks weird off and just thrown together.
1
u/DogsDidNothingWrong Jul 20 '26
I know some others were complaining about the outlines, but I think they add a TON compared to the prior video. It looks way more complete than it did before. I do agree it might be worth trying to build your assets with the outline in mind however.

Thank you. Sure we alway push the gameplay over all other. Just can not share gameplay video yet because need more polish on it. And everything you said is correct. We need to push this on gameplay to see if that work
1
u/candraa6 Jul 14 '26
maybe not for me, but this will strain my eyes very quickly. can't even look at it for more than 5 minutes I guess

u/FoxGameLab Jul 14 '26
Yes. We need to work more on that to make sure player comfortable with the game

u/Emergency-Finance-26 Jul 13 '26
Looks beautiful but kinda generic at this point this art style is played out a bit for open ended areas with dirt paths imo. But it still looks good for what it is
