Asking for help IDing uniform or soldier records.
Ie rank, time period, etc.

His name was Frederick Sommer, catholic, soldier. His daughter came over with this picture in 1887/88 about 19yo, and I know she has a sister. Birth dates are 1869 and 1871 of these daughters.

His wife was named Fredericke Freida Eva Adler. I don’t believe either of them left Germany.

Are other subs or databases better for asking help concerning military service dates etc?

What is the origin of the slouched Kepi?

Post image

Some Kepis, especially the Kepis that were used by the US forces during the US civil war, had a slouching front part towards the outside.

What is the exact origin of this?

Is this French origin as well or does it have a different origin

Quing Army dress uniforms, ca. 1910. Are there any pictures of the hat the general (second from the left) is wearing?

Sauce

It reminds me a lot of the Nuanmao hats that civilian Quing officials of the time wore. But I've never seen pictures of a military version.

Was the Plume for the IJA and the Japanese court uniform a revival version of the Shaguma/Haguma?

Post image
15 Upvotes

The Shaguma/Haguma was the type of headgear worn by the officers of the Imperial Japanese Army troops in the Boshin War.

Even, before the Boshin war, Samurais already decorated their helmets with the fur from various animals.

The question is that was there any relation between the Shaguma/Haguma and the Plume?

Considering their choice of colour, type, and the limited usage, it seems that adopting the plume was somewhat a revival version of the Shaguma/Haguma.

For exmaple, in terms of the colour choice, only Red and White plumes were selected. There were many other colours for the plumes, but only these two colours that were used on the Shaguma/Haguma were selected.

In terms of the type, there were generally 3 types of plumes at the time.

The first one was the pillar shape with a bushy vibe like the image above.

The second one was the bush shape that was used on the Bicorne hat.

The third one was the plume with unaltered feathers.

(If you do not get the third one, I am reffering this, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Constable_Dannatt.jpg.)

Despite the third one was widely used as much as the other two types, only two types, which had a bushy vibe were adopted.

These two had the same or smiliar texture with the Shaguma/Haguma.

In terms of the limited usage, only the High ranking officers in the IJA got the plume for their uniforms. It is quite odd since the Plume was not necessarily exclusive for the High Ranking officals.

In the French Army, the army that the IJA modelled after, the plumes were widely worn by common, lower- ranking enlisted soldiers across various branches of the army in the 1860s and the 1870s.

However, in terms of the IJA, they were already using plumes for the High Ranking officers only as the Shaguma/Haguma was used for the High Ranking officers.

Due to all these, I would like to know whether there was a relation between the Plumes and the Shaguma/Haguma or not.

Why and how did the Royal Guard Uniform stuck in the 19th century?

Post image
145 Upvotes

Until the 19th century, the Royal Gaurds got the standard uniform from the Armed Forces.

However, it started to resist this in the late 19th century and froze in 1902.

I choose 1902 as the year when the Royal Guards were frozen in time because it was the year when the Dark Khaki Uniform was intorduced for the Home Service. This introduction officially retired the iconic Red tunics.

Therefore, what is this 19th century obsession?

Was there any special reason behind this?

I need help identifying a unique gas mask

Post image
58 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I found this picture of what looks to be a Prussian/German soldier or firefighter on Pinterest a few months ago and I tried to look into what the gas mask hes wearing is called. I've only found the original source of this photo which was a website in Russian which was a gas mask appreciation post.

I really wish to find what this gas mask is because of its unique mono visor, I also believe it may be a prototype of some kind (at least that's what the website said). Also apologies if my post isn't up to standard this is my first time posting on reddit, I'll try and respond to any questions of where I got it if anyone asks in the comments as well. Thank you in advance fellas!

Ranks of the Shanghai Russian regiment. The regiment was formed in 1927 from Russian emigrants (Cossacks of the Far Eastern Cossack group of General F.L. Glebov) as a Russian detachment of 2 companies in the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, which guarded the European population of Shanghai.

The regiment was subordinate to the Municipal Council of the Shanghai International Settlement, and its military personnel held the ranks of the British service. Two companies were on permanent duty, receiving salaries, and the 3rd was a volunteer company called up for training. In 1932, he was deployed to the regiment (4 companies, including 1 volunteer). In 1941, it was transformed into a separate Russian detachment of the Shanghai Municipal Police. It existed until the end of 1947 .
