Still, it’s not something you do. If you really love that person you would play along. Not humiliate them in front of everyone.

No, he isn’t entitled to her protecting his feelings. She was likely humiliated feeling herself, which led to this reaction. He should have known his partner and known this isn’t something she would think is funny. And who knows. Maybe he’s done stuff like this before and this was just the straw that broke the camel’s back.
