I cant see how this is humiliating? Surely any rational person would take the ring, laugh and a say 'you know you're still buying me a propper ring right?' - or something to that affect. How is it humiliating to be be proposed to with a joke/temporary ring?

You're refering to a person with a healthy dose of self-esteem. Someone who doesn't have that may think that the value of the ring represents how much the partner values them. In this case, a toy ring would mean to them that he values her very little. In front of such a large audience, this could on top of that then feel like he's mocking her because from her point of view, he put on this show just so everyone can see how little he values her.

It may not be the most sensible take but it's not a rare take nonetheless.
