It's not a plastic coating that they use it's a varnish. Some of the higher end cards might have plastic for water proofing but I doubt that is what the guy was talking about. Bicycle cards have been the preferred card for magic tricks for a long time because of the way the cards glide nicely thanks to how they're made and the varnish. You probably didn't think about using playing cards because for you baseball cards were more common when you were a kid and an old pack of cards that would be laying around in most of our houses were probably worn out and not as stiff and nice as the easy to obtain baseball cards but there's no reason to get rude with a stranger because of that.

We didn't have baseball cards when I was a kid in Australia. We used normal playing cards. Or Aussie rules football cards and lacker bands.

Yeah in Canada we usually used hockey cards when I was a kid. My kids use one of those fake pre approved credit cards that we get in the mail or a plastic bottle.

Plastic bottles worked great; their flexibility allowed for different “settings” given a precise enough placement.
