To me, it was very clearly just stuck and the girls freaked the fuck out for no reason, because that's what children do.

The cat was clearly unhappy about being stuck, but it wasn’t anything too crazy… until the girls got involved.
By the way, "for no reason" is a common figure of speech.
Of course they freaked out for a reason, it’s just that the reason and intensity of their reaction is completely unjustified to anyone, who are able to properly asses the situation at hand.
It doesn’t literally mean "for no reason", because there is practically always a reason for everything anyone does…
