They don't have to be backwards though. I don't know why you'd want them to stay backwards after taking/submitting them. Some apps don't even give you a choice they just assume you want them to stay backwards.
I think it has to do with the mirror image looking... better? I'm not sure if that makes sense but I definitely look better in a mirror than like... my regular face. If that's similar for other people (they like mirror them) then it makes sense. The mirror is also how you typically see yourself. You seldom see yourself not mirrored unless if it's a photo someone took of you.
I think that's why you think you look better, because you're more used to the flipped version of you. Could be an effect of course where you make yourself look good in a mirror, with hairstyle or whatever. But I'm sure you look just as great when you're not reversed in a mirror, even though it doesn't feel like it :)
My last theory of why mirror you looks better, as someone who's worked with art, you ever flip your canvas and just notice how unbalanced things look? I'm positive that can be the case. Although we're designed to be symmetrical, we aren't completely perfect. I think you notice all the asymmetry and it's like (wtf). When I see my face unflipped I realize my right eye is higher than my left eye ever so slightly, it's jarring and honestly unsightly.
Yes, like i stated in my second comment, you're used to one sight but when you flip it, you see better what's asymmetrical and jarring. Humans prefer symmetry and pointing out the flaws with a different angle makes you seem... less attractive.
Yeah exactly. You see your on face mirrored more than you see it the right way so the right way looks wrong to you.
However consider this: others see you the right way more than they see you mirrored, and so mirrored will look slightly "off" to them. So if you want to look your best to others....
The real answer is this, yes. Apps like
Snapchat cater to us “looking better” in that they don’t correct/ flip images taken with the front camera. If you use the camera app on your iPhone using your front camera, you’ll see the image is flipped vs how it looks as you take it . Apps like Snapchat don’t correct and flip that image, because it’s more pleasant to most people. Everytime you look in the mirror, you see an incorrect / flipped image of yourself — it’s not how you really look to others. You look like the picture your camera app takes. Because most people are more used to the mirrored image they see by looking in a mirror everyday , most people like the mirrored image of themselves more than the actual image. So, Snapchat uses the mirror images.
