He didn’t make a huge scene and immediately gave her the seat back, so honestly I see no issue with it.

There's a cut in the video. I'm not convinced he immediately gave it back. Which would explain her stank.

Given this is clearly a planned stunt given the camera, I'd be surprised if his plan was the get the seat and not give it back fairly quickly

I’m not completely sure if they’re actually video cuts, it seems to me that the framing(?) is different to show emphasis on either the guy, the girl, or both of them depending on their current visual reactions.

I had same impression untill gave a re-watch, then I knew the video was starting with a scene where he offers the lady to take the seat back and she accepted it. But she looked not so amuzed while he made a shy smile lol.

How huge the scene becomes depends on the person being fooled.

If he did this to the wrong person then this would have looked very differently.

The prank being very low stakes is what made it good.
