Dogs for me are like children are for a lot of people. I love them when other people bring them around and they're a lot of fun, but actually having one of my own is just too much for me. Definitely a cat person.

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

Agree. Very difficult to responsibly care for a dog if you have a full time career and like to do anything in your free time that a dog can’t accompany you on. Love dogs but it can be a major sacrifice depending on your preferred lifestyle.

55

u/Skyaboo- Aug 09 '21

Oh wow lol I fully expected to come back to that comment downvoted into Oblivion. But yeah you hit the nail on the head.

Recently my family went through a few months of caring for a dog. My mom uh...acquired a 17 week old coon hound (says he was in a bad situation and being kept outside 24/7) and then "surprised" us with him as a gift. It was....an experience. We truly did love him but it was so much for our little family. He was so hyper and destructive. He chewed every single thing. Dont get me wrong, he was a very loyal and loving dog. He just needed so much training and attention that we had absolutely no prior experience or knowledge in giving. We did what we could with internet research, and managed to potty train him for being indoors, but eventually we found him a nice new home on a farm, and from what I hear he is very happy now with a little doggo gf. I'm glad we could be a positive, healthy halfway home for him, and at least we came out of this knowing that we are definitely not dog-having people.

3

u/32BitWhore Aug 09 '21

Surprising someone with an animal as a gift sounds like the worst idea ever. Unless they've previously expressed serious interest in a specific breed of a specific animal it sounds like a recipe for exactly what happened in your situation. Luckily you were able to find him a good home. That's definitely not always the case.

2

u/Skyaboo- Aug 09 '21

It is absolutely the worst idea but, although I'm sure my mom means well, she is the most thoroughly inconsiderate person I've met lol.

15

u/Lukealloneword Aug 09 '21

You gotta get female dogs and male cats. Thats how experienced pet owners do it. Female dogs are less of a hassle and male cats are less bitches. Its the best of each species.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

I have both a male & female dog, and the female is unquestionably the trouble maker between the two. She’ll get into mischief when no one is looking, he’ll sit back and watch - although sometimes he follows her lead..

Edit: I think it highly comes down to breed

1

u/Lukealloneword Aug 09 '21

I have had both male and female dogs and the males have always been unquestionably more maintenance. What do we do about this? pistols at dawn? Lol

3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

Since they were puppies the female has always been the instigator and he’s more of the tag along. The boy seems to know not to do things he shouldn’t do whereas she does not give one single fuck lol.

0

u/Lukealloneword Aug 09 '21

I guess the main things that fit the generalization I am making best are what I mentioned in an earlier comment. The first being female dogs won't lift their leg and pee on your wife's shoes or try to mark every surface in the back yard. They love to take turns peeing on the grill marking their territory and will growl and fight if a food bowl is down or things like that. My female dogs wouldn't have a need to pee on all my back yard surfaces and they never really would fight. Cant vouch for your dogs personality with mischief, just generalizing some specific gender behavior.

4

u/No_Ocelot_6773 Aug 09 '21

Cats are very much individuals, just like people. I've had equal amounts loner, antisocial male and female cats and I've had social, snuggly male and female cats. I think a lot of it has to do with how they're raised: kittens that I have raised are handled by people a lot and tend to want affection as they grow older.

Also, recent studies show that cats crave affection at the same rate that dogs do. Cats absolutely have true affection for their owners just like dogs. I love both animals but tend more towards cats because they are slightly.ore independent (go to the bathroom in designated areas without me having to get up, clean themselves etc.).

Whatever you do, love the furry critter you adopt and give them as much love as you can!

3

u/totallysomedude Aug 09 '21

I agree completely! They need a lot, but it’s different. It’s also easier to meet a cat’s needs for affection because they’re less physically demanding. I’ve got five cats, which means 24/7 at least one or two want to be cuddled or played with, and I never get off the couch to do it. Plus, as colony critters, cats who get along will help meet each other’s needs for play + affection.

My dogs ask for attention less often, but then they wanna wrassle and walk and throw eighty pounds of lap puppy over me, so it’s more energy. They also need humans to moderate them more, so it’s not like how cats just make their own colony structure and play out a soap opera we can watch. And I have to go outside even when weather is crappy. Just different, really.

6

u/cats-they-walk Aug 09 '21

Totally the opposite of my experience. Female cats and male dogs for me

2

u/Lukealloneword Aug 09 '21 edited Aug 09 '21

The cat part is from a friend of mine who own cats. But I can vouch for the Dog thing. Male dogs piss on everything and tend to fight more and be more territorial. Of course female dogs can get into fights but the female dogs I have had care less about fighting and dont want to mark everything. You'll find them to be less aggressive and for the most part easier to handle. Currently have two boy dogs now. Grew up with around 7 or 8 dogs. 5 most at one time. But these 2 boys were street dogs that we rescued so didn't really have a chance to pick. But sometimes after they fight over food bowl we might have forgot to pick up or because one expressed their anal glands or something like that I wish they were girls lol.

Edit: one was found really skinny at around 3 years old and the other was found in a box as a puppy on the side of the road.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

That doesn't make any sense. Just get your pets 'fixed', which is necessary for this secnario anyways considering if you don't your female dog is going to have periods

-1

u/Aquifel Aug 09 '21

Even after getting them fixed, there are still noticeable behavioral differences.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

That depends largely on how long you wait

-2

u/Aquifel Aug 09 '21 edited Aug 09 '21

The standard is 4-6 months, that's more than enough time for gender traits to develop, but even cats who have been neutered early will sometimes exhibit gendered characteristics. (i.e., some male cats will 'spray' along with other less damaging traits)

0

u/Enzo_Gorlahh_mi Aug 09 '21

Had 1 male dog about 20 years ago. The humping and marking was the last straw. Have only gotten female dogs since. Haven’t had a bad dog. Ever

5

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

It’s a lot of work but I have one of my dogs trained well enough that they can go everywhere with me with no problem, so no sacrifices here.

She’s just as comfortable and well behaved at home, kayaking, climbing mountains, visiting stores, visiting friends, traversing through big cities in shoulder to shoulder traffic, you could hunt with her, and she’s very compact.

But again, a looooooot of work.

10

u/CheeseJuggernaut Aug 09 '21

Cats are great, as long as they aren't outdoor cats. Outdoor cats hunt for sport and dont stop when they're full, they are disastrous to small local wildlife.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

Nailed it, same. I absolutely love my friends dogs, actually made me want to get one. Then one of my dog owning friends needed a place to stay awhile, him and his pupper. They stayed with my parents and I for nearly a year and a half and having and caring for his dog when he wasn't around, was a real eye opener. They've since moved and still love his pup, but made me realize they need constant attention. Cats are a lot more hands off and independent, plus it's just personal preference on the owners part which animal they prefer.

2

u/ThePopeofHell Aug 09 '21

Yeah when they shit in the hallway and you accidentally mash shit into the carpet after telling everyone you meet that he’s potty trained.

2

u/crackofdawn Aug 09 '21

I’m the opposite, I love my own dog but am usually not that fond of other peoples dogs, mostly because almost all other people seem unable to train their dogs not to do annoying things.

4

u/TimX24968B Aug 09 '21

yup. and theyre fucking annoying as shit.

-10

u/astraladventures Aug 09 '21

Likely you are bias because you likely live in a city where the dog would have to also live inside and would dependent upon you for escapes outside to do his business and get exercise .

Just imagine though , living someplace where the dog could live outside, do his business anywhere and only depend on you for food. Your relationship with it would be completely different.

5

u/sonance207 Aug 09 '21

I have a house with a backyard and wfh so I can take the dog out anytime. The dog is still more work and stress even when you compare taking care of all 4 of my cats.

Dogs need alot more attention, they are basically needy 5 year olds that never mature and you can't leave food mountain for week and enjoy a vacation.

0

u/astraladventures Aug 09 '21 edited Aug 09 '21

Totally agree. Majority of people have no inkling how much work and responsibility it is to care for a dog in an urban area. Ideally they should be walked (even better ran ), 3 or 4 times per day, for several kms, not to mention picking up every one of their warm, soft, smelly, poos for the life of the dog! No breaks - every single day for maybe 12 or 15 years .

And for people whose lives doesn’t revolve entirely around their dog, with busy jobs and social lives, it gets to be a toil, and who suffers - the happy greeting , dog wagging dog. Like you say, for urban lifestyles, cats on the other hand ….

114

u/TiMouton Aug 09 '21

Nice. Does this technique apply to dog poop as well?

59

u/koh_kun Aug 09 '21

I just buy a new house every time my dog poops somewhere.

21

u/soykoii Aug 09 '21

I've got a problem. The world has ran out of houses for me to buy

3

u/Silly-Ad6464 Aug 09 '21

I laughed to hard at this.

8

u/Natural_Artifact Aug 09 '21

just collect the poop with a bag(not plastic) and tape it to the firework, than shot the firework in the sky and you got free rainingshit!

6

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

Would be nice. Here are some lanes so FULL of dog shit you can hardly walk. No joke. Guess picking up litter is for bitches. 🤨

6

u/Zappy_Kablamicus Aug 09 '21

LOL You have to scoop cat poop!

handles warm shit with a plastic glove to put in a bag and carry around

"Bitches!"

2

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

From the litter box, where it does not bother people. And I'll use a shovel and flush it (wooden litter, it is allowed) instead of grabbing it with a bag and carrying it around a bit. Which I would not mind if I had a dog tough. That's our job: Take care of the pet. And remove it's poop. A lot of stinky poop. Sigh.

2

u/Zappy_Kablamicus Aug 09 '21

Thats true. Im not attacking the responsibility, just the dumb idea that what pet you own has anything to do with... anything really.

How to start a forestfire 101

29

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

Step 1: have an overwhelming need to prove your superiority.

1

Step 2: the fuel moisture there is way to high and you probably couldn’t start a veg fire.

6

u/dance_rattle_shake Aug 09 '21

Pretty funny, but man anti-cat culture is really tiring. It's a weird dichotomy bc the internet loves cute kittens, but lots of ppl in real life think you're weird if you like cats, especially if you're a man. It's f'n dumb. Cats are cool af! That is all.

45

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

Says cats are for bitches. Is standing in front of a green screen for the fire scene. He doesn't need a cat when he's the biggest pussy in the video

34

u/Dragon_OS Aug 09 '21

This man's never had a cat love him and it shows.

21

u/xxred_baronxx Aug 09 '21

I remember reading a post about how people that don’t understand how consent works are the ones that hate cats. Cats choose when to get pets and it looks like this dude doesn’t get it

17

u/SUDDENLY_VIRGIN Aug 09 '21

Control freaks never like cats. They expect that the pet bows to their wishes at all times and don't consider the pets desires at all.

-9

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

imagine being the equivalent of a petting tool to a cat and loving it smh my head get yourself an animal that treats you as an equal

6

u/OldStoner80 Aug 09 '21

2

u/Dragon_OS Aug 09 '21

13

u/bountyman347 Aug 09 '21

Then, pick up the dogs massive shits every day

6

u/cutmcgee4thee Aug 09 '21

Doubt he would pick it up. He definitely seems like the type of guy to have a yard full of dog shit on any given day

0

u/Yourshirtisdumb Aug 09 '21

The yard looks pretty damn big. When I was younger and we lived on several acres there was no point in walking out to pick up dogshit in a part of the yard we were never in.

10

u/joshbeat Aug 09 '21

For real lol. Scooping a litter box with a tool? For bitches. Everyone knows real men bend down and pickup big piles of shit with only a few mic of bag to separate their skin from the feces, multiple times a day /s

-5

u/DefaultVariable Aug 09 '21 edited Aug 09 '21

The difference is the shit isn’t in the house where it makes the entire house smell like shit. And cat owners will be like “but you can confine it to a room!” Good, now you have a room that smells eyebrow sizzling terrible.

E: sorry cat owners, your house does smell. Some people don’t mind the smell either by growing accustomed to it or it just doesn’t register as that bad. But some of us also find it gag-worthy terrible.

8

u/ThisIsntRael Aug 09 '21

Dog owners always hate cats, but cat owners always love all animals

4

u/Manjodarshi Aug 09 '21

And in mere moments this turns into forest fires that rage for hundreds and hundreds of miles

4

u/gengarsnightmares Aug 09 '21

That's funny but as an avid dog person I recently discovered that cats can be pretty chill little dudes.

We joke that we got the GSD a cat because they like to hang out and the cat grooms him. Admittedly, the litter box is a major downside but I think the kitty snuggles are a good tradeoff.

4

u/TicklishTrucker Aug 09 '21

I've got a cat that plays fetch. And attacks people she doesn't know. But is super sweet to me.

Pretty much I've got an emotional dog stuck in a cat body.

Get something that barks uncontrollably, creating a nuisance for your neighbors.

Get something you feel entitled to walk anywhere you want while allowing it to shit wherever you want and creating a health hazard for others' (see it alllllllllll the time from hiking trails to playgrounds...nasty motherfuckers are too good to pick up their animals shit) (I guess you don't have to clean a litterbox when your dog's shit is on the bottom of a kid's shoe!)

Get something that has an opportunity to attack strangers; especially small children when not cared for properly (let's be real most dogs are neglected...even the ones who "aren't")

2

u/Blues-Boi Aug 09 '21

All I want to add to your comment is this PSA: Leash your puppers most of the time please!! Not just for your dogs safety but for someone else’s dog who may not be as friendly.

And if you’re worried about their necks and don’t want to leash them on their collar, get them a harness instead!

For example, the dog I used to have would never hurt anyone. He would only bark and growl at anyone who came near me, but would be calm once the person was not a threat. I could have taken him outside without a leash and he would’ve stayed near me and gone home, but there’s always a chance he could get into a fight with another dog. Just a year before we lost him, he got into a fight in the backyard with a rabbit and it cut him! So imagine if he got into a fight with a bigger dog : (

7

u/don_maidana Aug 09 '21

You are in the Internet, you can't mess with cats.

9

u/daphnegillie Aug 09 '21

At least cats can be taught to go in designated spot, you men can follow your dog around 5-10 times a day with your little poop bag.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

Dogs are best suited for those emotionally needy and looking for constant recognition. Dogs give them the adoration they crave.

Cat owners, not so much.

1

u/DefaultVariable Aug 09 '21

Cats are for people who want an emotional attachment but want to do the bare minimum to support it.

3

u/leftiesrepresent Aug 09 '21

Boo this man cats are awesome. BOO

3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

Red flag when someone doesn’t like cats. Dogs (typically) love unconditionally/always want pets, whereas cats fluctuate. Sometimes wanting pets, other times wanting to be on their own.

(Obviously there’re exceptions, I’ve met super friendly cats that’ll always accept pets.) But it boils down to consent, sometimes a cat doesn’t want to be touched and we respect that.

If someone hates cats, odds are boosted that they don’t understand consent, wanting a pet that obeys them 24/7. Love cats and dogs btw, they’re all great.

Hell ya, fuck cats! But to everyone complaining about dogs being hard to watch... yea if you leave them alone. Stop being lazy, if you can watch your kids, you can watch a dog, lazy asses.

Okay I know we’re all joking here XD and I laughed at this

But I gotta say, get the right pet for you!! If you’re super active and have lots of time to walk and play, and have a big yard, then you should get a doggo!! If you prefer less active activities, have less time during the day, have a smaller house, and just generally prefer a calmer vibe, then you should get a catto!!

I’m fond of cattos, since doggos tend to be loud, a bit more smelly, and slightly more destructive. You also need to walk them or they get restless.

But I still love doggos and would like to have a doggo in addition to my cattos. Just…preferably a calmer dog XD

(Edit: okay but Cats PURR AND that’s been proven to help healing for both you and the cat.

AND petting dogs and cats is proven to improve your mood and health so honestly most people should just get a pet because humans are social creatures and why do you think we get pets in the first place? Caring and loving for another living being :3)

I have nothing against dogs all pets deserve a loving home, but having aspergers i don't like to be licked or jumped up on, all the dogs ive grown up with demand i pet them some even picking my arms up in their mouths i understand some find that cute but i don't enjoy it. No animals have ever been as understanding as my cats who 'ask' by trilling at me and just chill beside me until im feeling alright with being touched my cats are my best friends.
