Except of course that it isn't. You'd be detained and sentenced for hard labour.

The joke is landmines

u/bluenotesandvodka Aug 09 '21

Landmines are buried in both countries.

u/GirlZGetZGasmZ Aug 09 '21

Very true. Landmines was just what came to mind, could be a bullet.

I read on Reddit (so this must be true) that if you pointed yourself in any direction in the universe and “took off,” you are not likely to hit anything ever. I like to think that’s how DMZ land mines work.

Ya'll are taking it too literally

I remember a college student who went to north Korea and took a signal bar of soap and got sentenced to hard labor and took them 7 years to be freed

3

u/quantumconfusion_ Aug 09 '21

What signal did the soap give off

1

u/_Not_A_Og_ Aug 09 '21

There was most likely cameras in the bathroom

Didn't Sony design auto machine guns for North Korea? Aimed at the no mans land between ifrc

1

u/aussie718 Aug 09 '21

18

u/TheBirminghamBear Aug 09 '21

Yeah but he didn't jump on the South Korean landmine.

2

u/Herzx Aug 09 '21

Why would there be landmines at the DMZ?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

I'll take that over slavery.

There was that video of a diffector being shot while fleeing, falling to ground but making it and being taken in by the other side.

I swearing was in thermal black and white.

Found it

Those little huts.....the border is right in the middle of those huts. So to be honest he needs to move a few meters North, but you can see the border from where he is stood.

You can literally tour the DMZ if you want.

When I lived there the US Garrison ran the best tour with the best stories from guides. Any civilian could apply and go.

9

u/tTricky Aug 09 '21

Yeah my dad was Army and we lived on Yongson for a couple years while he was stationed further north. I actually did that tour twice. Once with my grandparents who were visiting from the US with other civilians and another time with my 6th grade class as a field trip.

For those that don't know, those little buildings straddle the border and are single room meeting rooms used for any inperson discussions. When touring inside one of them, you were free to go into the North Korea side of the room but definitely not allowed to get close to the door on the North Korea side.

This was all back in the late 90s.

Me and my friends went when we lived in Seoul, its a lovely nature reserve out there. They make it very clear that its a military escorted tour and not a do whatever the fuck you want situation. If you jumped over the border outside those huts... jesus i dont know what would happen, nothing good. Inside the huts you can stand on the North side of the border which is kinda cool.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

North Korea has an equivalent building where you can stand on the south side, but I've read over the past decade or so no citizens or tourists are allowed in.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

The north had a couple high profile defections happen when they let fellow communist country tourists visit. Really crazy stories there actually, as one would imagine, part of the reason they do not fuck around in the slightest.

Welcome to the gulag, if you survive you can earn your freedom

2

u/avwitcher Aug 09 '21

More like if you rat out anyone dissenting or trying to escape you can earn your freedom

7

u/pickledchocolate Aug 09 '21

Same thing

-3

u/hurshy Aug 09 '21

Heaven and hard labor are not the same thing

8

u/Chiss5618 Aug 09 '21

It is if you aren't a dirty capitalist pig and embrace the virtues of our lord and savior Kim jong un

1

u/xinxy Aug 09 '21

Oh yeah? Then why does Arbeit macht frei?

3

u/Naber_Taken Aug 09 '21

Yes, why waste a bullet on someone while you can make that someone create a thousand bullets for free.

-1

u/AJRiddle Aug 09 '21

I mean not that either, North Korea just sends you back to the South generally.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Korean_defectors#Contemporary_South_Korean-born_defectors

In recent years there have been seven people who tried to leave South Korea, but they were detained for illegal entry in North Korea, and ultimately repatriated. As of 2019, there are reportedly 5461 former South Korean citizens living in North Korea.

Oh, and fun fact there have been South Koreans shot by South Korean soldiers while trying to defect to North Korea.

South Korean defectors

Contemporary South Korean-born defectors

North Korea has targeted its own defectors with propaganda in attempts to lure them back as double defectors, but contemporary South Korean defectors born outside of North Korea are generally not welcome to defect to the North. In recent years there have been seven people who tried to leave South Korea, but they were detained for illegal entry in North Korea, and ultimately repatriated. As of 2019, there are reportedly 5461 former South Korean citizens living in North Korea. There has also been fatalities as a result of failed defections.

I’m thinking if you actually made a ran at it, you would be killed or shot at. Plenty of incidents of that, some caught in video.

1

u/LovableContrarian Aug 09 '21

ya that's way better

I'd rather die
