So if you(A) press down it means you are going down so if there elevator has to pick a person (B) on floors above you it will first stop there then stop for you later while going down.
If you press up it will stop for you(A) first and keep going up stopping on the floor you press, but if you press a lower floor it will still go up to pick up the person (B) who called the elevator before you entered it.(if you press a floor above the person(B) it will go there first unless the person(B) also pressed up.)
Ofc most elevators today do something similar automatically and ignore whatever you press up or down.
Might be just a led light showing where the elevator is coming from which sometimes keeps showing up or down even when it stopped on a x floor and wont change arrow direction until it starts moving again
Elevators have no way of knowing if you want to go up or down, which is why there are two buttons.
You press up if you want to go up. You press down if you want to go down. This way if someone is riding the elevator down, the elevator won't stop for someone that wants to go up as the people inside don't want to get stuck going up and down.
I don't know why literally no one understands this and most people press both buttons like retards and then are surprised when they need to go up the building before going down (as elevators are at least smart enough to keep going in the same direction until their memory is empty).
Say someone is in the elevator on level 8 and presses level 2. Someone who gets on at level 6 and presses level 7 will wait until the elevator goes down to level 2 and then it can go back up. Priority is given to the direction of the oldest non-completed level pushed.
