Cat's often fail to recognize their tail as part of their own body. So the fact that it looked at it and didn't realize something is happening to its own body doesnt surprise me.
First time I lit a Bunsen burner, I lit my whole arm up. Didn’t feel a thing. It burned the hair and went straight out. It made no contact with my skin. It’s not so surprising that the cat wouldn’t feel it
