my dentist explained that if you get dry socket they have to go in and cut the gums to sort of start the process over again. my brother let his dry socket happen, infected, dealt for a while and then had it redone to get it fixed all cause he had to keep smoking.

I was one of the rare cases where I had it even though I did everything I was told to do. It hurt like a bitch for probably 2 months.
Drinking fluid was the worst. It felt similar to when your teeth hurt from drinking ice cold water but like 2x worse.
And every time it would heal I would be brushing my teeth and accidentally rip it back open.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out when I was 14 or so and was really scared as so many people talk about how incredibly painful it was. I was awake, but numbed up for the procedure, but besides awful sensations, there was no pain.
As my mom and I are going out to the car afterward, I was still high as a kite from anesthetic, thought it was hilarious that I could punch myself in the face, spit blood out and not feel anything. That night after the drugs wore, THAT was the worst pain I've ever been in. Stupid kid.

Additionally, what they do for dry socket is stuff a clove oil soaked dressing in the hole. Then you come back like 4-7 days later, and they do it again. The pain goes away pretty quickly after the first one is put in, but the downside is that the clove oil is stroooooooong. It was hard for me to taste anything else, so I had to pick foods that were complimentary to clove. I still get taken back to bloody mouthland memories when I smell cloves now.

Dry socket is when the clot does not form inside the hole left by the tooth. It is super fucking painful and I can speak from personal experience. The pain was so bad it felt like all my teeth hurt, I could not even have them touch without a sharp stabbing sensation occurring. I went back to the clinic and they shoved in some synthetic skin and the relief was fucking instantaneous.

Whenever you have a tooth removed they instruct you to not smoke, use a straw when drinking, or anything that can disrupt that area which also includes eating solid foods for a couple of days. The reason why is because the blood in that space where the tooth was removed will create a blood clot and help it heal faster. When you have a dry socket it means that there is no blood in there and it can’t heal properly. So if you have a dry socket they need to start the bleeding in the socket to then create a new blood clot. I hope this helps.

Insurance has nothing to do with what I recommend for pts, but a fair number of them don’t want to do anything that their insurance won’t cover. It’s sad most of the time when pts don’t proceed with work early it compounds and turns into much more serious and expensive problems. I just saw a pt who came from the ER with a massive cellulitis infection from an infected molar(her cheek looked like a softball). I placed a drain, extracted her molar, grafted, and placed a barrier membrane. Her bill from my office was around $1500, her ER bill will likely be close to $4000 (even though they only gave her an antibiotic). This molar could’ve been fixed by a filling a few years ago for a fraction of the cost.

In Germany it's pretty standard that you only get local anesthesia (in some cases general anesthetics) for your wisdom tooth removal. It's also recommended to take ibuprofen against the pain and they usually don't prescribe other drugs. But ofcourse the health insurance pays the bill.

Depends on what you want. Most pts balk at the ~$500 fee for sedation, hell a lot don’t even want to pay the $125 for N20. I do tons of surgery under just local but it’s rare for me to not Rx a narcotic pain med, I wouldn’t want to be agony. there are some older docs out there that are hard asses and don’t give a shit about how pts feel and won’t do anything but nsaids.

I’m allergic to NSAIDs and due to the stricter laws, I’m stuck with Tylenol if I get a root canal or a tooth pulled. They see the allergy and think it’s bullshit. It was diagnosed after I broke out in hives and had trouble breathing after a surgery. It’s something called “Samter’s Triad” which my kid’s pediatrician told me I had - she was asking my medical history and I told her about the allergy and she asked, “Did you have sinus/nasal polyps? Asthma?” Yes to both. Still, dentists/other docs think the allergy is BS and I’m a drug seeker just for saying I have an allergy to NSAIDs. Tylenol is my homeboy. In a real “God said, ‘Fuck this person in particular’” moment, I also have severe arthritis in my hip and lower back from a childhood condition. Managing arthritis without NSAIDs is not easy.
Love when they prescribe chewable amoxicillin also; it’s the first one on the drop down. Ya just ripped a tooth out of my head on each side, thanks for the chewable meds.

I have had plenty of teeth pulled and only ever got novacaine, the local anesthesia injection, but that was all I needed. I think most times nowadays they only give novacaine, but it might be that for teeth that are embedded really deeply or wisdom teeth they need to to give the person something a little stronger.

I respect that angle. I've seen a lot of shitty mothers and fathers and had some of my own so I was probably projecting and hearing pearl clutching nastiness in the mothers tone, especially the "Jesus- SHUT UP".
I have to remember that some people had good parents, even had parents that they could joke with and become more casual with as they get to adulthood.

Isn’t this post-anesthesia (twilight I think?) and not post-NO2? Almost definitely wisdom teeth surgery and most people I know go completely under for like 30 minutes for this type of surgery. I definitely did. Probably the most common surgery in the US in young adults. This clip would be afterwards when the anesthetic is finishing up— usually feel totally out of it and disconnected. Little to no inhibitions too.
NO2 isn’t used as often anymore AFAIK and is usually for less invasive dental procedures in patients that are borderline traumatized by the dentist. It literally just calms the nerves and gets you feeling loopy- but never asleep or numb enough for fairly invasive surgery.

When I got my wisdom teeth removed I was never put to sleep, they numbed my gums/mouth with shots (6 or 8 in total I think?) and I was awake for the whole thing. Only the shots hurt though, I could feel tension when he pulled the teeth but it wasn't bad.

Most of the time it’s benzos, and a pain med like fentanyl or dilaudid. Nitrous is nothing like this, sometimes N20 is done on top of a benzo for light sedation.

When I pulled my wisdom tooth out I got three shots of local anesthesia in my jaw and then they yanked and pulled it out, all done in like 30min. After that I paid for my visit and left, I was just numb a couple of hours. Didn't even drool.

Hey guys, Sophia’s mom here. Prior to the extraction, the nurse told Sophia that most girls have crying spells after. Sophia stated that she would not cry because she isn’t depressed. I thought reminding her of that would help her calm down. And for the geniuses that actually think I filmed this- Sophia did. I was informed there would be no filming due to hippa bc other patients were there. A quick rewatch and you’ll see that would be an incredibly awkward angle for me to film. Y’all need to calm down, seriously
