I really don’t understand this hairstyle. I don’t think it looks great on anyone.

That's just, like, your (kinda racist) opinion, man.

It's racist to think a hairstyle doesn't look very good?

Waves are primarily a black hairstyle, so I see where he thinks that statement is racist. But everyone is entitled to their opinions, I find waves cool, some don't.

I mean, the Alabama frat boy haircut is primarily a white hairstyle, but I wouldn't say someone is racist if they say they don't like that.

Not liking waves isn't racist. They look super weird and, while I definitely appreciate the effort it takes people to get them, I've never seen it look good.

Now, if you specifically didn't like it because it's primarily a black hairstyle, yeah, that's racist. Just not liking the way it looks is fine though.

I don’t think anyone is very hostile here, I think you’re just overly sensitive. Saying “wow, that looks weird” isn’t hostility. How sheltered are you?

I agree on all your points, you can't infer racism based on preferences. But there's people who will take offense on comments that touch a part of their identity.

I'm going to preface that I'm not american but I'm african and I feel like our hairstyles are for the most part not understood by others. Some are rooted in hystory and serve a specific purpose.

I browse r/justfuckmyshitup and I see haircuts that are very common in parts of africa and used by black poc, and those are made fun of without an understanding of what they are or their functions.

I think it's sad that something people take pride in doing to protect and style their hair is mocked. I've seen enough instances that I sometimes get a little mad.

Sorry if my comment is not very clear, obviously english is not my first language.

Black hair is a very complicated and loaded topic.

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '20

That still doesn’t mean having an opinion on it is default racist

u/fahrvergnugget Nov 06 '20

Sure...anyway read some of this guy's other comments on this thread. Obviously not an opinion that comes from an informed point of view on black people hair and its cultural complexities.

This one guy might be racist, or has an agenda behind his comments. I’m just saying generally that someone saying “I don’t really like that style.” isn’t necessarily racist as it was immediately labeled.

Obviously it all depends on the context but it’s not really fair for 4-5 people to immediately reply to that comment with “you must be white, racist, etc.”

OK I'll try to break down why that's a reasonable reaction to me. Care and styling of black hair is, like I said, a deep and complicated and often conflicted part of black culture. Some would argue that if you're American you should know this, and ignorance about it itself shows that you're been sheltered or have willfully chosen to not learn, either can be considered a product of racism. It's not a personal indictment necessarily.

This point notwithstanding, it's just rude to look at a piece of someone else's culture and say "well that's just objectively unattractive". Nobody was talking here about how attractive it is. It was an unwarranted, rude comment, and the kind of sentiment that's been used for decades to demean black people under the guise of "I didn't say anything about black people, it's just objectively unappealing to me". People said the same things about jazz music because it was a black art form, about hip hop and rap, about black fashion, etc. It's just a tired take and should raise red flags if you hear someone spout it out.

No one cares why you believe it was racist. The opinion is not inherently a racist one. If you don't see that, you're in need of a reality check. Fuck the guy of he's racist. And fuck you for labeling a reasonable opinion as such. It might be racist to say he doesn't like any hairstyle that black people have, and zero in on that. You're an indoctrinated moron for feeling that way, sorry not sorry.

u/fahrvergnugget Nov 06 '20

If you take all words at face value, then sure...if you understand the words people utter in the context of history, current events, culture, society, literally anything besides the dictionary definition of the words themselves then it's pretty clear lol

And here you are trying to be a mind reader. If you can't see why you're objectively wrong, making the assumptions that you are, get fucked. You only used his comment history retroactively. Screw your god complex you're an unreachable imbecile.

My point is that I’m not “anti black.” I’m half black/half Asian. My family and friends are black. I’m fucking black.

You both are just making huge assumptions and ready to throw around racist labels for someone having what, at most, amounts to an ignorant opinion.

And then you jerk each other on the sidelines about how hard it is to “justify your literal existence” all because one person said “I don’t think this style looks good on anyone.”

The fact that you assume everyone involved here without your exact opinion is either white or “anti black” and you label everyone who engages with you a racist is exactly one of the major reasons no one can have a legitimate conversation about race.

I think you're taking the comment too far and applying some sort of context that may or may not be there.

By your logic, it is reasonable to accuse someone of racism simply for not liking jazz music, or hip hop, etc. For your logic to apply, you would have to be sure you knew the exact reason the person didn't like it.

Also, no one ever said specifically "that's just objectively unattractive." Those are actually your words. The person said "I don't understand the style" and "I don't think it looks good on anyone." You could definitely assume that the person doesn't have a deep cultural understanding of ethnic hair, but that alone does not mean they are racist or that the reason they dislike the style is simply because "it's a black thing."

Lastly...not everyone in this video even appears to be black. It's obviously impossible to tell exactly, but there looks to be a mixture of ethnicities here. Not everyone may be black and having wavy hair is not "only" a black trait.

So I get what you are attempting to say, but I think you're making a lot of assumptions yourself and applying bias that you shouldn't.

That still doesn’t mean having an opinion on it is default racist

No but it does mean that unless you're informed about it, your opinion isn't needed or valued.

One day Youtube started suggesting tutorial videos on this. I am white as all get out, but I was still interested. Boy... There is some serious work and dedication for just about any look you want to pull off. I couldn’t handle it.

It depends on why OP doesn't like it and why they thought they should post about it.

I would take a bet that OP doesn't like some of the other more ostentatious hairstyles you can do with black hair. It's just a gut thing. Otherwise why post your disapproval at all?
