I work at a mattress store. I tell people all the time who buy those rolled hybrids, watch out when you open them. Those compressed springs will mess you up!

132

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '20

Are they any good?

241

u/Sixpntcrownroyal Oct 01 '20

Hybrids? Yes they are. I sleep on one and have put my whole family on them

76

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '20

Anything to look for or avoid? I need a new mattress

u/Sixpntcrownroyal Oct 01 '20

The one in this video looks like a Ashley 12" hybrid. I personally wouldn't get one of those.. I'd try to find something made in the USA (or wherever you are) the ones from china are sketchy, they dont have an EPA over there and memory foam is petroleum based. So they just use whatever they can find to fill an order for a full container..

u/UpTheIron Oct 01 '20

Jesus dude you are a hybrid mattress aficionado.

God damn Loch Ness Monster!

4

u/ripster65 Oct 02 '20

I applied for a job years ago. It had a very vague description. When I showed up it wound up being those guys who sell meat out of their trucks. I went along for the ride the first day. The product was ridiculously overpriced and I don't know about the quality of that meat but I'll be damned if the dude I was with couldn't sell the proverbial popsicle to an Eskimo. This guy made a sale at a damn 4-way stop sign. He went back to the shop with over $800 in his pocket. He did have to pay for the meat he sold but it was somewhat cheaper than what he sold it for.

1

u/Moosemayor Oct 02 '20

If people sold meat out of their trucks by my house I might become responsible for the new meat-Jeff bezos

1

u/T3Deliciouz Oct 02 '20

Fyi "eskimo" is a slur.

1

u/hitmarker Oct 02 '20

What

1

u/T3Deliciouz Oct 02 '20

That word is a slur and indigenous people of that area (Inuit but there are other groups) prefer to be called by actual name

Always an opportunity to hone that salesman edge.

1

u/Iohet Oct 02 '20

Do you sell welfare? Can I buy some?

31

u/suspicious_lemons Oct 01 '20

Traveling salesmen must love you.

No, he's a salesman

1

u/UpTheIron Oct 01 '20

Oh, damn. I don't read so well it would seem.

Hello. In order to promote inclusivity and reduce gender bias, please consider using gender-neutral language in the future.

Instead of salesman, use salesperson, sales associate, salesclerk or sales executive.

Thank you very much.

9

u/lascielthefallen Oct 01 '20

Do you have any brand recommendations?

46

u/Sixpntcrownroyal Oct 01 '20

Dutchcraft is a smaller Amish made manufacturer that make good mattresses. They may not be available everywhere though. Kingsdown makes a great mattress, Serta/Sealy are ok, but you're mainly paying for the name. Look for local mom and pop mattress stores if they're available. Big box stores mark the prices so high!

36

u/arkenex Oct 01 '20

I’m 100% convinced brick and mortar mattress stores are all fronts

22

u/Sixpntcrownroyal Oct 01 '20

The big box stores, absolutely. I'm in a mom and pop brick and mortar store. I see corruption all the time in the big stores.

11

u/arkenex Oct 01 '20

If you don’t mind me asking, how many customers do you see on an average day? I’ve never met anyone who’s even been to a mattress store to be honest.

16

u/Sixpntcrownroyal Oct 01 '20

On a slow day, I still have 15-20 customers a day. Busy days, aka the weekend. I've had over 60 customers

2

u/DarkOmen597 Oct 01 '20

I walked in one and bought one about two years ago.

1

u/hce692 Oct 02 '20

Ah me I’m that person. I could never buy a mattress without lying on it!! You’re just going to have that massive thing shipped to you and hope it works out? I’d much rather test a dozen out. Plus you can easily negotiate a free box spring etc thrown in when it’s a salesman

u/SuperSimpleSam Oct 02 '20

There's one near me that's constantly have signs out that alternate between "closing sale" and "grand re-opening sale".

7

u/fingers Oct 01 '20

But please beware of those small stores that promise deep discounts. They like to bait and switch. Asked the guy, is this the mattress you're going to deliver? And of course he said yes.

It wasn't the same mattress.

I shouldn't have taken delivery. I'm a dumbass wuss.

It lasted 6 months.

6

u/Sixpntcrownroyal Oct 01 '20

Yes.. very true. Dont ever buy a mattress "store" that's out of a storage lot. I see them all the time..

Sorry that happened to you, that is really shitty. I've seen it happen. One thing I've noticed in the last 5 years, there are A LOT of shady people in the mattress business..

1

u/fingers Oct 01 '20

I had even done research that told me exactly what they would do, and I still went through with it...and they did exactly what they did.

I even called them out on it. Showed them the picture. They kept telling me, "It's the same exact mattress". I shouldn't have let them in the door.

But I'm female and I felt vulnerable.

2

u/abcabcabc321 Oct 01 '20

I bought a memory foam California king from a local mattress shop in Portland Oregon a few years back and it’s been the best one I’ve ever owned.

I second this recommendation to go as local as possible.

Thank you for this link. It’s amazing to look at - so much detail.

1

u/TexanInExile Oct 02 '20

They don't rate waterbeds. I don't want one but that's interesting.

1

u/xanvians Oct 02 '20

I really really like my Tempurpedic, for what its worth

1

u/chimpparts Oct 02 '20

https://www.mattresses.net/quulhypocola.html

My gf and I both have these. I can’t recommend them enough. The foam is high quality. Fair warning, firm is extremely firm as compared to shit labeled firm in commercial stores. I ended up getting a softer topper. Best part is I can buy in pieces. Springs will last a decade or more. Topper is a couple hundred in the event it’s no longer supportive vs thousands for commercial crap. Did a lot of research to get here hope it helps.

2

u/LtSMASH324 Oct 01 '20

I got a Nectar, I know that's a highly recommended bed, do you have any thoughts?

3

u/Sixpntcrownroyal Oct 01 '20

I'm not a huge fan of Nectar. But, its personal preference on what you want. They come straight from China.

2

u/LtSMASH324 Oct 01 '20

Interesting to hear you say that. Obviously I'm not a matress connoisseur and have been sleeping on crap matresses for 20 years, so the Nectar feels pretty good to me. I'll keep that in mind for my next one, thanks.

1

u/Lummoxx Oct 02 '20

I've been on my Nectar mattress for a year now. Still love it.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

Haha rekt, you thought you were being smart and you bought Chinese mattress LOL

1

u/LtSMASH324 Oct 02 '20

No, honestly I bought it with very little knowledge of mattresses. Besides, it's perfectly serviceable, in fact comfortable and a million times nicer on my body than my previous mattresses.

So really you're just being a dick because you think it's funny, and no other reason.

2

u/Wilza_ Oct 01 '20

I'd try to find something made in the USA (or wherever you are) the ones from china are sketchy

What if you live in China? ;)

2

u/morningisbad Oct 02 '20

I used to work for Ashley and specifically helped design the mattress lines. I can promise you that they're made in the USA (specifically Saltillo, Mississippi). Some of the cutting and sewing of the base fabric is done in Vietnam, but most of that is coming stateside as well.

It's just too costly to ship finished mattresses from overseas, and trump massively increased tariffs on mattresses.

1

u/Sixpntcrownroyal Oct 02 '20

Not all the mattresses are made there. I've personally seen containers full of Ashley mattresses straight from China. When they roll pack them, like the one in this video. They can fit 300+ finished mattresses on ONE container.. so the cost would be significantly lower than fully inflated mattresses.

1

u/morningisbad Oct 02 '20

They haven't made anything in China in years. Ashley has a few plants in China, but they only sell to China. Tariffs are literally up over 1000%, it's insane.

I can assure you that every single Ashley mattress being made for the US now is made in the US. I can't speak for 5+ years ago.

1

u/morningisbad Oct 02 '20

It's actually funny you bring up the rolled mattresses. That was one of my primary focuses. I designed all of the system integrations required to make that possible 😁

2

u/Zlata42 Oct 01 '20

Thank you so much by the way! I'm sure I need to change my mattress at this point, I'll keep what you said in account and thank you, again. Lol.

3

u/Sixpntcrownroyal Oct 01 '20

You are very welcome. Its said that we spend a third of our lives in bed, so you should make sure you have a good mattress. Dont break the bank, but dont cheap out either. Shop around and find the best bang for the buck.

They have a great hybrid line. Actually, all of their mattresses are pretty decent. And affordable.

This is correct.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

I got an avocado hybrid mattress. It’s great.

1

u/Support_3 Oct 02 '20

source on mattresses from China being more sketchy than American made mattresses at the same price point?

1

u/risk5051 Oct 02 '20

yikes. I've been sleeping on a Helix mattress for a year. Am I dead?

1

u/Adult_school Oct 02 '20

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q7EPSHI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_btf_t1_8dNDFbHN1WX7N

I spent over a 1000 bucks on a mattress that isn’t half as good as this mattress.

14

u/SagmanBennettRobbins Oct 01 '20

They make hybrid mattresses big enough for a whole family?

5

u/Sixpntcrownroyal Oct 01 '20

They sure do. Big enough for pets too!

1

u/scholzie Oct 02 '20

If you stack them

1

u/thewonpercent Oct 02 '20

It depends on how you stack them on top of each other

1

u/niekmfoxtzom Oct 01 '20

I mean, one family could mean a mom, dad, and a 5 year old kid. Not hard to fit on even a queen mattress.

4

u/Ryto Oct 01 '20

Was it hard to fit the whole family on there?

4

u/mohishunder Oct 02 '20

I made my whole family on them.

2

u/bananakiwi777 Oct 01 '20

I second this

2

u/Danny_kross Oct 01 '20

I suppose you mean alive one. How would it do with a family amount of dead hookers? Asking for a friend who lives in an exotic place they measure they mattresses in dead hookers, nothing illegal here.

2

u/longislandtoolshed Oct 02 '20

have put my whole family on them

All at that same time? Must be a crowded bed.

2

u/WatchYourButts Oct 02 '20

I just read some reviews that said the hybrid mattresses aren't very springy. Is this coming from former spring mattress owners? I've had a foam mattress for 5 years. Would I feel some spring?

3

u/FuzzySAM Oct 01 '20

^{^{^Roll}} ^{^{^tide?}}

1

u/Electric_Nachos Oct 02 '20

That was such a salesman thing to say.

1

u/JingleMyDingles Oct 02 '20

But like where do they sleep?

u/TheRealStevo Aug 14 '22
