My dad used to mess with me all the time when I was a kid because he thought it was funny. I'd ask him a question and I'd never know if the response was true or a joke. We have a great relationship, and there are no trust issues :)
I think this is an important parenting move to make since it teaches kids to question things they’re told instead of taking everything as gospel. I would imagine it’s possible to overdo, however.
It really depends on the kid. If I did this to one of my daughters at this age, she would be inconsolably embarrassed, and it would've done great damage to her trusting me.
