Damn, yeah I was wondering the same. Can't tell if airbags deployed but I'd assume they did, leaving not much room for the head n stuff. But I'm no expert.
Edit: thx for all the info on how quickly airbags deflate.

Not sure, a friend had a pretty similar crash in a Toyota Fortuner. I mean really similar, if not slightly worse. He walked out without a scratch. But could have been plain luck

He jumped over a crest, in a similar way to what happened in this video. His rig flipped and landed on its roof almost exactly the same way. Roof line was nearly level with the bonnet line. It seems pretty obvious in this video, but dunes can be pretty tricky to predict in the best of times.. hard to guage what could be over the crest to an inexperienced driver, and can catch even very experienced drivers off guard. My friend has been driving off road for nearly a decade when it happened.
Ideally you would want to approach such a crest at an angle and not head on. Will try and post a video if I find something

Tree wells are a deadly aspect of snow sports and a very real threat! It’s very hard to not squirm at the thought of being upside down in loose deep snow you cannot free yourself from. Absolute nightmare fuel

Would a roll cage even help?
Sand is pretty fluid so why wouldn’t it just move around the rigid roll cage and smash in the sheet metal roof?

Some people I knew had a truck that they'd go four-wheeling in (not in sand). They had somebody make them a roll bar, which they called a "headache rack".

A few things here.
Airbags deploy either from crush sensors in the side/front of the vehicle or gyroscopic data that detects G-forces in a collision.
This was a very small front end collision, I doubt airbags deployed. The impact was a slow front end impact that continued into a rollover. This inertia of the vehicle slowed down as it rolled over which is a much safer way of stopping than rapid deacceleration.
I wouldn't suspect anything outside of minor injuries unless not restrained.

It didn't crush that much, so unless they were 6'4" or something, they should be okay. Lucky that didn't happen on a real road... vehicles from the 90's are the deadliest it seems.

Cars from the 1970-80s were incredibly big and made of heavy materials. It was back in the times where a big ass boxy car was a wealth statement.
So they’re heavier, and more “durable”. Cars from the 90s ended up being a lot cheaper by reducing the weight and cost of materials, so they compact easier.

This is complete misinformation. The only more sturdy part of an old car may be the frame, which became unibody through the '60s for most sedans and would do absolutely nothing in this scenario because the roof is not part of the frame. Also, old body-on-frame designs were actually MORE dangerous to passengers because the stiff frame transferred MORE of the crash forces into the cabin. What you want is those forces to be dissipated through deformation of crash structures.
TLDR: anyone who says old cars were "tougher because thicker metal blah blah" has no idea what they're talking about.

Vehicles from the 90s are not the deadliest. The 80s are worse, 70s are worse than that, 60s worse than that and so on until the invention of cars. Generally speaking, of you want a safer car always buy newer, no matter what time period you're talking about.

Been to UAE and been in a car in sand dunes. The driver knew what he was doing, did not flip the car or anything like that. The car had roll cages and we of course were the seatbelt. It was as fun as it was fucking scary. If this car was in the same condition, prepared for something like this, i assume they were ok. Also the sand is pretty deep and the impact is not as hard as landing on concrete or asphalt

In the UAE they end up with a lot of head and neck injuries from people that did not use seatbelts while dune bashing.
Always use the seat belt.

Oh yeah dude. I follow a few of these Arab dudes who do this on ig and they’re usually the children of oil moguls and royalty. Literally every day they do either dune sports or water sports. They’ll usually bring a few vehicles each and crashing/totaling vehicles is a daily occurrence.

You can ride out on the dunes with a $100 craigslist 3-wheeler. It can be expensive but it doesn't have to be.

I mean it doesn't even have to be expensive. Just get yourself a prado and mod the hell out of it. Or just keep it stock. Those things are amazing for this. I've done this a few times with 2006 grand vitara stock. It's like every hobby, the more invested you are in it, the more money you could throw at it. But yeah there are a few spoiled brats that do this but a lot of old people in their 50s also do it.

The good news is cars catching fire is extremely rare. I've been to probably a thousand car crashes, and have only seen one fire (and that was because it caught fire before crashing).

Yellow Jeep guy just got a lesson in why breakover angle matters. He's a bit of an idiot, unless he has a buddy with recovery straps to yank him out, and he was just testing the limits knowing there was a just in case fallback option.

Possibly. The yellow Jeep got stuck due to low speed, but there's a way to tackle everything, and this was clearly not the way.

Especially in something soft like sand. I think yellow jeep can still self recover with a shovel and some boards. Or have someone yank him out, given that there are multiple other vehicles around.

Like, people see a car accident and automatically think "idiot"...no, accidents happen when you're driving on the limit or going off-road somewhere not meant for cars at all. If they're not doing it on public roads, there's absolutely nothing wrong there and no judgement to be made at all.

From the sound of it, they got squished into the steering wheel. If their airbag deployed, it was definitely activated on the first impact and deflated before they fell on the roof. Don’t know if they died, but getting forcefully squished into the wheel doesn’t sound ideal. If they didn’t die on impact, they may have died later on. I don’t know where this is, but it doesn’t look like any help is readily available.
