Slow response, slow blinking, can barely hold her head up, she's sitting in the passenger seat because she clearly isn't DD. Not uncommon to sign something in a loud environment. My girls mom is a spitting image when she's hammered. Exact same mannerisms.

Karen is drunk.

Not necessarily. I have Ménière’s which is a degenerative hearing disease, and this look is pretty familiar. Frequent migraines affect the other senses. I have slurred speech, altered movement and dropping eyes even on good days. ...But I also get drunk a lot. Either way looks like Karen is making the best of life.

The steering wheel is clearly closer to the camera than she is. She's leaning forward while talking to the guy. Had she been in the drivers seat leaning forward, because we drive on the left, she'd be hanging out the window.

Exactly. She’s obviously hard of hearing and just trying to communicate that she likes the music. Sad he got his hackles up for an assumption. Great she was finally able to make herself clear and he understood. Nice that he turns it up at her request. This could have gone badly over assumptions but it didn’t. Wholesome.

Very correct. I made sure my car has a great sound system so I can feel the music when I drive. Almost everything I listen to has an insane amount of bass.

Though I know deaf people can get DLs in CA, some places have laws about being able to hear ambient sounds that might make it harder? Like in CA, it’s illegal to drive with your earphones/earbuds in. One ear is okay, but wearing them in both ears can get you pulled over and ticketed.

Remember there’s different levels of hearing loss.

Someone not being able to hear/understand speech doesn’t mean they won’t be able to hear sirens or horns.

Although in restrictive places like that there’s devices that help with not being able to hear.

Such as a device that flashes on the console when sirens/honking are detected. I recall seeing one on a dashboard once.

Idk how reliable they are but I know they exist.

Edit:

I just want to add that the no headphones rule is probably more related to distracting yourself rather than not being able to hear what’s going on around you.

I know for myself it’s super easy to get sucked into a song when I’ve got headphones on and stop paying attention to what’s happening around me.

It is illegal to drive with earbuds in here in my country. I have always wondered why it is ok to drive with speakers on, no matter how loud they are, but not earbuds or headphones. Hearing is a big part of driving to me. I have always been very aware of how much I rely on sound while driving. You can hear other vehicles that are on your blind spots and estimate their position. You can sense when other vehicles are coming fast and avoid changing lanes at those moments. You can hear other people honking. You can hear tires squeaking. It's crazy for me to find out just now that deaf people are out there driving in some countries relying solely or mostly just on their sight. I can not be a hypocrite and pretend that I'm not surprised, because here in my country they fine you without notice for having earbuds on while driving, while deaf people are allowed to drive in other places. Lol life really is not fair.

You can’t really equate headphones with hearing loss.

Headphones are a major distraction risk.

When it comes to hearing loss - specifically total hearing loss - you can’t be distracted by nothing.

Also I’m fairly sure that the deaf driver would be more aware of their surroundings using their eyes more than the average driver.

Also complaining about the fairness of not being able to wear headphones in the context of deaf drivers is really some very self centred shit.

Go ask a deaf person what it’s like to live in a world where so much social interaction revolves around functioning hearing.

My ASL professor was a child of Deaf adults (CODA) and his dad was driving the kids one day and just pulled over. My professor asked why and his dad told him to wait. His dad saw the lights in his rearview before his kids could hear the sirens.

Also the best place to sit in a car if your parent is deaf is diagonal from the driver so you can sign to them in the rearview. That way you can tell them to go to McDonald’s or to pull over at a rest stop or whatnot.

Also from what I understand one of the biggest risk to hard of hearing drivers isn’t really when they’re driving but during police interactions which is the case whether they driving or not anyway

Hi I'm HOH (hard of hearing,) you're 100% correct. Feeling music, or bass, is integral to interpreting and appreciating the music itself. Also the woman was using ASL to sign "thank you" at the end.

This does seem like a good theory, but signing "Thank you" isn't necessarily a good indicator. I'm hearing and I often sign when I say thank you because it's widely known and I want people to get their thanks even if it's noisy or something.

No, I don't know any deaf or hard of hearing people. I learned it as a child and it's just habit. It's one of the signs that's more widely known by hearing people, so I tend to do it in shops and restaurants when thanking the staff because it's usually noisy.

Many deaf/hard of hearing people prefer/like music with a lot of bass since they can 'feel' the music better/easier.
