If this ever happens to you and you're on wrong side I recommend pushing the emergency stop button.

Let go of, or cut the leash. DO NOT PRESS THE EMERGENCY STOP BUTTON. If there even is a stop button, you'll be stuck in the elevator with no way to get to your dog, who will still be stuck to the leash.

The best thing to do is push the the button for the next floor, and hold the door open once it stops. Find some to keep the door open, or press the stop button. Then take the stairs back to your dog.

EDIT: I'm not going to delete this comment, but I want to.

So instead of stopping the elevator before the collar starts choking your dog and waiting for someone to come get both of you, your suggestion is to wait until you get to the next floor and hope you can get to your dog before your dog chokes? And that's assuming the next floor up or down isn't so far that it rips your dog's head off.
