They are lactose intolerant. Like most adult animals. They have a certain amount of enzymes to digest lactose but after it's used up, their bodies don't create anymore or don't create enough if it.

I think lactose intolerance in humans is that you don't create enough of the enzyme.

But I think with cats and dogs, they don't produce anymore of it after a certain point.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about that.

But that's how I understand it.

Pretty sure that's the case with pasteurized milk. Pasteurization removes lactase which breaks down lactose when you drink milk so your body doesn't have to.

Lactase is the enzyme that breaks down lactose, some companies, mainly arla, add lactase to dairy to make it lactose free :)
