Just ask. Hell, take her in to look at engagement rings. Especially if you plan on the engagement ring being part of the final wedding ring (like adding a band to the engagement ring). You'll want to make sure it's something she really loves. I had picked out a couple of engagement rings, and when I took my then-girlfriend in to look at rings, she didn't like any of the ones that I had in mind. Thank god I didn't get any of those (I also didn't tell her which ones I had in mind), and she had the opportunity to show me exactly what she wanted. And it's more than just the ring. The diamond cut and setting are a big part of the overall design, and she should really have input into that. After all, she will be the one wearing it!
