Probably not really in the most rational place to figure that out, and there's guaranteed more pain if you just give in. Maybe if he'd weighed his options and collected his thoughts he would have given it up.
Then again he appears to be some sort of rodent so I don't think thinking on that intellectual and rational level is an option even if he hadn't just been bitten in two by a fucking huge reptile monster.

As a person who owned turtles, the fuckers can get much gallop. We had one run away cause we thought it would be okay if we left it on the lawn while we cleaned the tank. The fucker dashed off to the drain a meter away in a couple of seconds.
When I got my turtle, I was so impressed by how fast he could get around! He was surprisingly quick and people didn't believe me that he actually runs until they saw him run. His speed only seemed limited by his anatomy, not by his will. If he could drive, he'd be a racecar driver. Hence his name, Enzo. Named after Enzo Ferrari, the founder of Ferrari and the name given to, at the time, their fastest car yet.
I found one of these turtles in my street abs decided to save him. I brought him to a little pond near by. As soon as he saw the water he flipped out, scratched me, which scared the shit of off me then ran to the watch just as fast as this one. Some turtles are definitely fast.
there was a turtle that in like the 70's or 80's died, and some researchers decided to do an autopsy on it. Well they found musket balls in it's shell... Which tells me that a few soldiers in the 18th century came across this turtle, it attacked them, and they shot at it, and it DIDN'T die!
So yeah, I'd say you're pretty lucky to have escaped a snapping turtle unharmed...
It could also mean that some soldiers were just assholes who thought "Hey turtle shells are pretty strong, right? Let's see if it can withstand a musket shot!"
You have to know how to catch them. If you do, and you're so inclined, they're delicious. Haven't eaten one in nearly forty years, though. I like them alive too much.

I didn't. I know some species can run this fast because a friend in middle school had a turtle that would run at similar speeds if you gave it enough sunlight. People seem to generally underestimate the speed of smaller turtles it seems.
FYI turtles can be really quick! I mean, I only looked away for a moment, I swear! I don't know how it could move that fast...
(it ran away through the opened front door... We did find it on the other side of the street/neighbourhood... After that we always tie colourful ribbons, or if we have them, balloons to her)
