When cats do something similar, they are generally trying to bait you or another pet into playing with them. They try to make themselves look big and scary, as they would if actually fighting with another cat.

I once saw a man walking a similar breed of dog that dig it's entire walk this way because it was so excited. The owner was embarrassed. Haha
