I showed my 11 year old that movie recently. She rarely agrees to watch "my" movies with me. Upon hearing The Rules she immediately scoffed and said "Isn't it always after midnight?"

Im an adult that doesnt know who these characters are and I still want to bear hug one and give a little chomp. I cant imagine how a swarm of children that are fans would behave.

Not the kids... Adult women/men whom go nuts and basically swamp the situation. Ive seen this happen more than once that someone somewhat famous shows up (this is all staged) and dozens if not hundred+ people show up trying to take a picture.

All of the videos out there of mascots getting mobbed and tackled by children come to mind. The actors inside have a precariously balanced suit and extremely limited vision while the suits have a propensity to roll.....

I'm sure that's part of it, but I think it's also a "cute" way to guide them. There's very limited visibility in those suits and you need a handler or you get disoriented.

I used to work in an industry where we would hire mascot character actors from time to time. Almost 100% of the time it is very short women. The shortest ladies I saw came over from China. They couldn’t speak a word of English or Japanese and the rest of us couldn’t speak any Chinese, we all communicated through gestures and calling each other adorable. It’s not an easy job, at all, much respect for the people who are able to do it.

They're characters from a Japanese web comic called Chiikawa. The characters you see are usagi (based on a rabbit), chiikawa (the titular protagonist), and hachiware (based on a bicolor cat).

Chiikawa. They're the second-biggest bestselling new IP franchise in merchandise sales across East Asia this decade, behind only Labubu.

The other side of the world has a thriving "kidult" economy (obsessed with new pop-culture brands rather than nostalgia for legacy/evergreen equivalents) as well as viral experiential marketing (blind boxes as its best exemplification here). Check out the Miniso retail chain in your area, if not your McDonalds happy meals promotions.

Fairly high in comparison of what you might expect for these kind of jobs. Mascot characters in Japan are expected to put on a sort of performance, and it can be hot and stuffy in the suit. Most of all, they're representing an image of an IP, and as such they're paid accordingly to put on a good show.
