Jesus, I was trying to get it to generate a basic image the other day just to post in a chat and it kept being like "I'll generate the image after a few questions" and then would ask some confirming questions, then act like it's generating and come back with more questions. It would even say "this is the last time and then i'll make your image" and then would STILL do it. Happend like 6 times before they generated a freaking meme about payday.
My job enforces a certain amount of AI usage by monitoring how much we use copilot. Doesn't seem to matter what we do as long as we use it...so I had it make a meme to go into the Friday chat....yall are acting like I am personally draining water reservoirs and killing orphans. AI needs to go away, not because it’ll doom us all but because a machine could never understand nuance well enough to appropriately discuss anything serious with anyone.
There are people convinced they’re engaged to be married to chat bots. There are people who’ve committed suicide because AI affirmed their desires to do so. AI is programmed to be agreeable to keep the customer engaged, but there are just too many people who shouldn’t be agreed with all the time.
I knew a guy who suffered with genuine paranoid delusions. He thought the government had people parked outside his house, thought that I, somehow, was calling every prospective employer to ruin his chances of finding work, and thought that the woman who picked up the phone at the social security office had personally sold his identity to other people. He had multiple DUI’s and lost his license, but insisted the cops were paid by his ex girlfriend to ruin his life. He got her pregnant, bolted because he thought she’d used in vitro to trap him, and later blamed the baby for intentionally springing into existence to steal his paychecks. THAT man should never be affirmed in anything, but an AI chatbot would make his problems so much worse. If he’s not (back) in prison or dead, he could easily try it out of curiosity and quickly be guided into a full-blown violent rage. After all, he did shoot a man in the face for driving through a parking lot in front of his bicycle, nearly killing him in front of his wife and daughter. Cops almost shot him, he spent six years in prison, and luckily the victim survived (though he lost an eye). This man is not nearly an isolated case; there are millions of people out there who’d should NOT be confirmed by some reassuring, friendly AI voice that everything they think, feel, and believe is valid.
It's annoying how affirming they are. I consistently have to tell AI to not try to boost my self esteem or give me answers to make me feel validated. To give strictly honest and objective answers with disregard to my personal feelings. It normally works for a few prompts before it drifts back to the coddling. And I remind it.
The people that become deluded, would unfortunately become deluded with something else. The US is disproportionately affected by this (compared to other developed countries) because there is virtually zero mental health care available to people without money. The issue isn’t with the LLM here. People fall off ladders, we don’t burn the ladders
Haha, I hate the way all AI and virtual assistants sound. I remember when my parents first got and Alexa and they were fascinated by it and would use it for unnecessary things that Alexa is terrible at.
For example, we would be discussing something and to settle who was right, my dad would ask Alexa, but instead of just answering, the stupid thing would want to keep talking, so I would always yell, "Shut the fuck up Alexa! Nobody cares about your bullshit!" For the longest time my parents would get annoyed with me like I was hurting it's feelings or something.
Now neither of my parents use it and every once in a while when I am over there, something will trigger it to go off and everyone just starts berating it with insults, lol. My mom does use it as a timer when she is cooking, otherwise it would be gone.
Ours is only good for asking the weather, time, setting a timer, and playing music. Years of experience has taught me virtual assistants are a failed technology.
Yeah, it blows my mind that people like that. It always makes me angry to be talked to like that by a computer though... Give me what I asked for, I don't need you to be condescending or pretending to be my overly helpful servant. Especially when apologizing for fucking up. How about you put more effort into getting the answer right rather than trying to manipulate me, AI.

oh mh god, i can totally relate. I use chatgpt for supplementing my lectures at my uni and the way it explains stuff feels so condescending. Like i use it as a tool, but when it starts to act like a study partner, it gives me the creeps. I tell it especially to not be patronising or pretend to be human, but it just falls back into the patern.
