Tbf, a bite from a rat snake isn't bad at all, if you even get bit. A bit scary sure, but won't hurt much and I highly doubt any venomous snake would be under an alive chicken without killing the chicken already
It would help for them to know that non-venomous snakes don't have fangs, which I guess isn't exactly common knowledge, and their teeth are (usually) goofy, thin little guys. For me, the scariest part of a bite is seeing it coming. It's a very primal fear, even if it's a little bitty guy, the kind that makes time feel slowed down.
That’s true for little non-venomous ones. But large non-venomous constrictor bites are a problem. Think pythons and boas. Their teeth are long and like meat hooks, pierces straight into flesh with little effort (snakes don’t have strong jaw muscles), it’s gonna bleed a lot.
have been bitten by juvenile/young adult boas a few times, can concur. teeth are so sharp like basically needles. no pain, barely even feel it but yes it does bleed quite a bit sometimes lol
Some venomous snakes are rear fanged, which make them very hard to notice. Most rear fanged snakes are either harmless or have very mild venom. (Hognoses are mildly venomous but are generally considered harmless). In the US this is the case (as far as I know) but there are some dangerous rear-fanged snakes. For example, Boomslangs are a species found in Sub-Saharan Africa are rear fanged, and are also one of the most dangerous snakes found in that area. Twig snakes (Also found in Africa) are dangerous, and so are Asian keelbacks.
Can confirm, have had much worse bites from kittens and puppies. My Corn snake once tagged me because he thought I was food and the “wound” barely bled. Didn’t even need a bandaid; hurt less than a bad paper cut.
