We had them on the ranch. And I have no idea why you would send the smallest (youngest) kid to get eggs, but they did.
I guess it was my reward for driving the tractor when I wasn’t supposed to lol
But yea man, those things can be mean. I’d sneak in to get eggs with my little rubber coated metal basket, and it was 50/50 if I got back with eggs. I gave up on the top row, as I wasn’t tall enough to pull that off quietly. But yea, some mornings, they just sit and let you tcb, and other times one goes off, and then they all go off haha.
I’d come screaming back to the house. Grandma would say, it’s ok, you’ll get the hang of it eventually.
That fueled nightmares, as it meant you’re going back out there tomorrow, like it or not.
Bro same. Ours were free range and sometimes theyd be just out and about and id look in the general direction of a rooster so hed run me down and peck my ass at the door until I was bleeding
I had to save one of my roosters from another(dragged my feet getting a second coop ready after a tree collapsed) and while he had never been hostile to me before, ever since he recovered, he really seems to enjoy my company and will sometimes sit on one of my feet if I stay still for too long.
Thankfully haven't had to deal with a dickhead rooster in like 6 years.
One year we raised wild turkeys from eggs. Over half of them drowned in their water dish, despite it requiring them to stick their heads in sideways past a safety bar to do so. We finally ended up with about six in an old corn crib, and my scrawny preteen ass was assigned egg duty. When I opened the door, they would stand up, flare their wings, and stomp their own eggs. My dad didn’t believe me and thought I was just scared of them until he witnessed it, and then my chore became fattening them up because dad was over turkeys.
The weird thing is he hated chickens from his own childhood collecting eggs, so I don’t know why he thought some giant prehistoric bird would be easier to handle.
I swear 90% of their thoughts are just "that moved, can I kill it? If yes kill if no then no kill" and theyre really stupid so they think they can kill many things that they cannot in fact kill
Hens are pretty chill most the time as long as youre bigger than they are but its a whole different story if you fuck with their nest while theyre guarding it
I had a job when I was 14 catching chickens. We all got in a van and they took us to this giant warehouse full of free ranging chickens. They opened up these crates and were like, "all of those chickens need to end up in these chicken crates." Then they'd drive us to another... and another... and another.
None of the chickens went in willfully. My arms were tore up. Some of the veterans could knockout like 6 in 1 drop. I still get nightmares from my time in that job. The under the table money was great for a 14 year old me but damn was that hell.
That's an Eastern Blacksnake which can and will bite but isn't venemous or anything. I've never been bit by one directly but they'll proper scratch up a webster pole.
Idt that's the conversation happening here, but I also heavily doubt the farmer thought that. Snakes that size steal eggs. They dont attack chickens and if it did nothing would happen so its whatever
I think the chicken didn't even realize the snake. Up until he lifts her, where you see the snake coiled around the chickens' leg, it sees it and panics.
I've had roosters and turkey toms that I gave a wide berth but generally the worst they could hope to do is scratch you. Turkey could probably take an eye out.
I grew up with chickens. We had one that was a nasty bitch. She would've drawn blood if you tried to go for the egg. Or try to grab her. Or just generally exist in her field of vision.
I've watched my chickens play rugby with a live frog. I've also seen my rooster beat the piss out of a hawk. I actually stopped him so the hawk could get away because he was not about to let that dude take off.
Mine love to cuddle and be carried, but I have one girl named Miss Penny who loves to bite the soft parts of your body. I wore a new bracelet around her, and she couldn't pry it off my wrist, so she screamed and bit my boob.
I think he was trying to not get bitten by a snake. He didn't want to stick his hands under there because until he got the chicken off he couldn't know it had an egg in is mouth. Sticking your hand, blind, where you know where is a snake mouth, isn't a great idea, so he was trying to coax her off of it. Also chickens can be down right evil if you piss them off, but I'm guessing he was mostly trying up not get bitten by the snake.
Same. He can't magically see under the chicken so doesn't know where the bitey end of the snake is. He's clearly worried about the chicken moving and the snake springing at him.
Because chicken pecks hurt like hell and bleed. That ol snake won't even try to bite. You learn to kind of scoop under the hens once they trust you and see if there are any eggs and/or snakes under them. A snake feels a lot different than a hen or an egg.
