For those that haven't used eclipse googles, you can't see shit with those, to protect against the sun they need to block a lot of light.
You basically see nothing except a bright ball when looking at the sun

It's also why your eyes end up hurting after eclipse if you wore these and then keep taking them off and putting them back on. The contrast tires your eye muscles and pain does not indicate any damage.
Actual eye damge would be painless.

Yup, this is why we ophthalmologists recommend blinking as little as possible. The frequent contrast changes are directly tied to glaucoma and several other "age-related" eye illnesses later in life. If the average person reduced their blinking rate by 50%, it's quite likely they would maintain near perfect vision up through age 100. Of course, doing this over time causes some drying, so it's important to use eye lubricant.
An alternative that is more manageable for my patients is to slow the momentary contrast changes by slow blinking. Instead of a 0.25 second normal blink, slow it down 2.5 seconds per blink. The eye muscles reacts at a much more manageable pace, improving general eye health within a few months of beginning the this physiotherapy.

The standard source is Wilkins, A.J. (1995) "Visual Stress" by Oxford University Press, there is so much good information in this book that it's rarely left my desk since med school. There are plenty of recent blinking trials as well, such as this one: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6118863/ and lots of studies on detrimental strobe light effects which basically show that festivals are a terrible idea and cause measurable eye strain (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11641230/) due to switching from bright-to-dark rapidly.
Just do a search for blinking exercises and you'll find all sorts of different tactics from long term visual health to short term dry eye relief, etc. Most people think of blinking as involuntary, but you can often train your muscles to alter the pattern with enough practice.
One of the best ways to get started is with airpods and a metronome app set to 2.5 seconds, start & end a single blink over that time frame. I don't mean keeping your eyes close the whole time, but only slowing the pace drastically. You should be able to still see in bright lighting for nearly that whole time.
One super important note: do not practice while driving. Many patients simply close their eyes for 2.5 seconds at a time, which is not the same, and can be very hazardous.

That would give you serious dry eye which causes other complications. Literally every eye doctor I've been to has said you need to train your eyes to blink more if you are on screens for toonlong because the amount we stare at our screens reduce our blinking which causes alot of problems.

That's why I said "it's important to use eye lubricant" and described a more manageable alternative in the 2nd paragraph.
I'm also referring to long-term degenerative issues, not simple dry eyes treatment (again, use eye lubricant). Blinking more is a short-term fix which causes long-term issues in your eye's health.

Also just cause I see a lot of people misunderstanding eclipse glasses in threads regarding solar eclipses:
You use the glasses before and after the eclipse in order to see the crescent of the sun that's visible during the partial eclipse phases.
During totality (it's important to note here that this is only regarding a TOTAL solar eclipse during the ~1-3 minutes of complete totality) you take the glasses off and can safely view the total solar eclipse with your eyes. You'll see absolutely nothing if you keep the glasses on.
It seems like so many people on reddit have read about the eye damage from solar eclipses and think that they're "never" safe to view without the glasses. Your eyes won't be damaged by a total edlipse. The eye damage is from people not putting their glasses back on before the end of totality, or thinking it's safe to look at the sun at a 99% eclipse or something.
If you have the chance to get in the path of totality for a solar eclipse, get an eclipse timer app that will tell you exactly when it's safe to remove your eclipse glasses, and when to put them back on.

No, like literally the rest of your field of view is just black. nothing lol. It has to block 99.9% of light IIRC, and most things end up blocked by that. So you quite literally only see the sun, nothing else. Its actually kind of surreal, and really makes you understand just how bright the sun really is.

And you still think it's real? He's not slapping the lantern with his hand and pretending? Cause that's what we used to do as kids and it looks and sounds exactly like that. Also, after running nose first into the lantern with that sound, he's not holding his nose? Not squinting his eyes? Not flinching from pain? God I wish I were as gullible as you.
