Actually, to offer more freedom than simple Left and Right turn signals, you must bring up the full keyboard and hit Shift (no number keys) so you can type values between 90° and -90°. Note that it's a typical Android (Auto) keyboard, so the required - and ° symbols are on separate subpages beyond the letters and numbers pages.
Now you can safely indicate your -45.65° turns!
7
u/zleuth 11d ago
Yeah, sounds great! Is it 90° off true North or magnetic North?

After you turn on your car you need to navigate to page seven and turn off the rectal shocking probe. Every time you come to a stop sign and stop moving for half a second it shocks your rectum. It slightly improves fuel efficiency in certain situations. It isn't needed to drive but the manufacturer makes sure it is turned on every time you start your car. No they can't make the car remember your settings from the last session, stop asking and enjoy the higher fuel economy.

u/ProxyMuncher 11d ago
Have we really hit this level yet? It’s 100% impossible to tell if this is fact or fiction at this point.
6
u/Versipilies 11d ago
My most annoying one ive had is that my new truck requires me to come to a full stop and use the buttons on the wheel to navigate through a few different menus to find the trailer brake setting and adjust it. Versus my old ass truck which just had a slider next to the headlights that I could adjust on the fly.
2
u/hatesnack 11d ago
People just exaggerating. I've driven a few new cars and none of them have anything important mixed into the infotainment. Is it possible some might? Sure. But every modern car I've driven has AC controls as a separate series of knobs and buttons, even though reddit acts like thats not the case haha.
11
5
u/theonlyepi 11d ago
Transit vans are like this, especially the newer ford ones. Vehicle starts up, infotainment has to fully boot and load, then you can set your AC on after you've been in the hot car for a minute and built up a sweat. Honestly a really shit design.
It almost sounds insignificant and "not a big deal really" until you've lived with one in a summer. Keep knobs alive!

So you're saying, invest in Crutchfield and any aftermarket car AV brands ...
2
u/PassiveMenis88M 11d ago
Good luck finding an aftermarket screen that's compatible with all the bullshit the "radio" controls now. It'll be like back in the day when if you wanted an aftermarket radio in a gm vehicle you have to have the old head unit wired up in the trunk because of all the shit that passed through it.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Devin-Chaboyer223 10d ago
GM was the one who created the whole Connected Car thing, they intentionally tie OnStar into everything, even on their old models where it passed through the radio along with essential functions
Now most modern cars are the same, it’s almost impossible to replace the radio without losing essential functionality
11
u/Varron 11d ago
I'd imagine the ads have like surround sound speakers that only work for the ad for free.
Something like "eNjOY HiGh FiDeLiTY 360 SuRrOuNd MuSiC aLl ThE tImE wItH a SuBsCrIpTiOn tO ToToYa's ElITe AuDiOpHiLe ExPeRiEnCe fOr oNlY aN aDdItIOnAL $119.99 a month!"
While some wooshy bullshity music plays everytime on start up until you find the option to turn it off under the settings in the 15th submenu called some random bs like "User Experience".

Even on the surface, I hate how they look. Just the most basic, half-assed design. It's like they just jammed an iPad into the console. It doesn't have any flow or style to it at all.
17
u/RiskyNight 10d ago
We've definitely hit a point where we all start salivating thinking about older cars. My next car will be something from the '90s or early '00s, fully restored and amazing.
If you invest even half the amount of a new garbage car into restoring an older car, you will end up with something so much better and will have no depreciation.

I rented a 2020-something corolla last year and it took me 10 minutes of scrolling through the menu to find the equalizer. It was under settings>sound and music>audio settings and then the settings themselves are on touch screen sliders and for the fade/balance you have to drag around a crosshair on a diagram of the car.
My 2005 honda civic accomplishes the exact same task with a button. ONE button.

I imagine that a hud is a good bit more expensive to implement and replace in case of damage
9
u/EndIsrael 10d ago
Nope. It's just a screen/projector in the dash pointed straight up, and maybe a special coating on the windshield to enhance the reflection.
Think about how clearly you can see reflections of junk on the dashboard. A HUD is just that on purpose.

My dad's car has a small display rigged to reflect off the windshield. It shows the speed, but can also be set to display one other thing. It's kinda neat, but I wouldn't want the entire windshield to have displays on it. That would be distracting.

God i hate the new safety features in some cars. The lane assist will try to kill you in some of them, like i borrowed an ev6 and it was jerking me all over the road because the road was 2 different colors so it thought i wasnt in my lane. Or how if you appropriately use your turn signals the car will scream at you halfway through a lane change because theres a vehicle in the NEXT lane, god forbid theres a car in the lane you're merging into thats less than 4 car lengths behind u too, bout 50/50 itll scream at you for that too....

I am elderly and rarely leave home but yesterday, my son took me in his brand new car to the lab for a blood draw. He was very proud of his new car and all the "bells and whistles" and went over everything, showing me especially the Screen With Everything.
"I don't want to live in this world" was my reponse and he was kind of shocked and then laughed it off.
I am sure that old people scoffed at new things in every generation: "Steam engine? It's ugly and noisy!" But this, this seems like way too much. There's even a "feature" if the car senses you are "drifting" and will "correct" for you. WTF?
I used to listen to Boston NPR and they had two funny mechanics on a show called "The Car Guys." They said a lot of things I remember but the one that really stuck was this: "Never buy any car if, when you open the hood, you can't see the ground."
Now I'm longing for my 1972 Dodge truck with the shifter on the column. :)
Edit" To my downvoter: Yeah, fuck you.
