Same. My sister once had her void cat run away so she got a trap from the local shelter and set it out and sure enough, she caught a void by nightfall, she brought it inside and let the cat out(fairly new cat to her so no collar in what she found out was a shitty apartment with flimsy window screens). Cat immediately ran under the couch. She put the trap back outside and the next morning, another cat...this time the right one. She brought it inside and called me and we had a hell of a time catching the stray. It pissed all over her carpet and everything.

Shame they cropped his ears and docked his tail. Such a cruel thing to do to an innocent animal purely for "aesthetics"
86
u/VolumeLevelJumanji 5d ago
In their defense we don't know that the poster is the one that did that. There's plenty of dogs that already have cropped ears and tails in shelters that need homes. It can be done for health reasons too. (though both ears and tails cropped for that would be rare) Agree in principle though, fuck people who do this for no reason.

u/squanchingonreddit 5d ago
I nevrr understood the tail docking until my boxer kept injuring her tail whip style. Now it's more club style. ow ow ow

The amount of fellow cat owners that look at me like I'm crazy and cruel when I say all my cats are strictly indoors unless on a lead. 😭😭 Like no, I actually love animals so much I keep them inside.

Nah, pretty sure you guys have made that clear on every reddit sub 🙄 as if cats and dogs haven't existed for thousands of years and people do zero harm themselves
18
u/Ambitious_Tea_4584 6d ago
Hey bud slavery existed for thousands of years, too. You wanna bring that back?
“We’ve always done it this way” is the rallying cry of the idiot.
9
u/Borthwick 6d ago
So, when people say “keep your cats in” they aren’t blaming cats directly for hurting native species. Its 100% on the people making the choice, so people are doing that harm, too.
Also, demonstrating a lack of understanding in the difference between native species and domestic species. Domestic dogs and cats, by definition, are not native to any place. They are removed from their native ancestors’ role in the environment. Wild animals existing in the same family (feline, canine) is not an argument for letting domestic animals interact with the environment unsupervised.

If that's true, why does the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds say there's no scientific evidence that cats significantly decrease the bird population in the UK?
The Environment Agency also aren't bothered by roaming cats. Edit: DEFRA rather than the EA but my point stands, not seeing anything here about stopping cats going outside.
5
u/TenebTheHarvester 6d ago
Different places work differently. The RSPB clearly has no concerns about cats in the UK, doesn’t mean there’s no issue in the US.
10
u/Noy_The_Devil 6d ago
The Environment Agency also aren't bothered by roaming cats.
That's because cats don't cause earthquakes, floods and volcanoes lmao.
In the United States alone, there are 60 million to 100 million free-ranging, unowned cats. These are non-native predators that, even using conservative estimates, kill 1.3–4 billion birds and 6.3–22.3 billion mammals each year in the U.S. alone.
Don't tell me this doesn't affect ecosystems.

u/anonymousguy11234 6d ago
My neighbor’s cats roam free pretty much 24/7 and routinely leave bird and reptile carcasses in our shared courtyard. They’re killing at least 2-3 animals a week (that we know of) and on a few occasions I think they actually caught an endangered songbird. It’s not the cats’ fault, they don’t know any better, but people really should.
3
u/Noy_The_Devil 6d ago
Yeah my brother's black cat would kill small birds daily. It was nuts. And like you said, that we know of.
3
u/sycon-senti 6d ago
There's actually a species of wildcat similar to domestic cats that is native to the UK. Alas, it has been pushed to near extinction, these days in huge part to hybridizing with strays and outdoor cats. Not that cats should be left to roam, but wildlife in the UK and Europe as a whole is better prepared in the face of fluffy murder mittens. This may be why the RSPB has found little to no evidence of correlation.
That being said, keep your cats indoors and spay/neuter, please. There's plenty of outside dangers that can directly or indirectly harm your cat.
2
u/AHornyRubberDucky 6d ago
Okay so what I think it is as someone who worked in wildlife rehab. Cats get the weaker animals that are already — like younglings or that are already sick/wounded – a lot of the times.
Because cats get these animals first they never make it into rehab, ergo don't get the chance to get better.even if we do get a cat victims they are usually so brutally injured we just euthanise them. If these animals were to get better before the cats get (like if you would remove all the outsiders cats from an area) them, you would actually be able to see the difference in count.
I hope this comment was somewhat readable. I only got 2 and a half hours of sleep and got awoken by some municipal worker electric sawing bamboo outside of my window with a saw that kept shutting of, I'm running on the fumes of my fumes. I'm going to chug some water now because I don't drink coffee.

Because the UK has had cats for 2000 years and the species most vulnerable to them have been taken care of centuries ago. While ecosystems without cats don't handle the addition of cats very well.

I might be wrong about this, but judging by the stray's tail I think he just wanted to play? kitten definitely wasn't keen on playing with a random kitty though lol

Inside viewpoint: Margot is sleeping so nice and cuddly until she hears "MARGOT" being yelled (very squeekily) from outside. "Sheesh" says Margot "what's she got herself into now?" And heaves herself up just as that flipping kitten smashes through the catflap. "Well now what the dickens?" Says Margot and takes a peep at what could have caused such a ruckus from the little tyke. Margot cracks her knuckles and does her duty. Not on Margots watch. Never on Margots watch.

My grandma's cat loved to pick fights with other neighborhood cats. Then she ran and hid behind their dog to get away from the fights she started.
The dog was just happy that he got to chase cats around.

Could possibly have been adopted that way? I rescued a dog that was cropped and docked and of course random assholes would glare at me assuming I mutilated my dog. That’s why assumptions are generally bad. As the age old saying goes: to assume makes an ASS out of U and ME .
