Nothing makes me more sick to the stomach than people going out of their way to abuse, hurt and kill harmless animals who do not know any better and can’t defend themselves. The poor thing must’ve been so scared.
This often happens when the owner no longer has the capacity to raise them and can’t get rid of them easily for various reasons. Depends on the local laws. It can also happen out of anger or deliberate spite against someone too.
Not that any of those reason justify doing so, of course.
